Foreplayer by Kate Meader

The next Rookie Rebels novel

Featuring Mia Wallace, Vadim Petrov’s sister!

She’s all grown up and ready to play . . .

She’s got game everywhere but the bedroom. Enter the player who knows exactly how to grade her curves . . .

After a very public breakup and a viral post that declares him the villain, power forward Cal Foreman is taking a timeout from women and relationships to focus on hockey. When Chicago Rebels captain and old friend, Vadim Petrov, “volunteers” him to help train Vadim’s sister Mia, Cal figures he can do a favor for a pal and get ready for the season with his new team. But the imperious Russian would slice a skate blade through Cal’s internal organs if he knew what lessons Mia really wants.

Yeah, not that kind of stickhandling.

Hockey phenom and Olympics hopeful Mia Wallace needs help seducing the man of her dreams. That man is most definitely not Cal Foreman: notorious playboy, thorn in her side, and her brother’s bestie. But surely a guy with his reputed skill set has a few tips on how she can nail her target—which makes him the perfect foreplayer.

Cal knows Mia sees him as merely the warm-up act in her grand plan to win another man, but as they spend more time together, he wonders if that’s enough.

If they could be more.

And if he could convince her he’s worthy of the starting line-up . . . in her heart?

With a stony glare, he headed to the kitchen and removed a bottle of water from the fridge. “I don’t drink the devil’s bubbles.”

The devil’s bubbles. Cute. “You should use a water filter instead of these one-shot deals,” she said. “It’s terrible for the environment.” She unscrewed the cap because she was a hypocrite and her throat was bone dry.

He took the water from her after she’d downed a quarter of it and put it to his lips.

And drank.

She watched, mesmerized. Her lips had been there, right there, and he was … treating her like one of the guys. This boded well for their upcoming buddy chat.

“I need advice.”

He passed the bottle back to her and headed out to the living room. “Okay. Come sit.” He patted the seat beside him. She could sit where his hand had touched and it would be like her … no. What was wrong with her?

Surely she wasn’t attracted to Cal Foreman. While she could see the appeal—the man had a rough and ready sexual charisma and Tara had talked him up in the sex department—he was not her type at all. Not that she had a recognizable type but she knew it wasn’t this.

She took a seat one cushion over and placed the bottle on a Quebec Royals coaster on the coffee table.

“Is this about your tryout?” he asked.

“No.”

“Vadim?”

“Why would it be about Vadim?”

He squinted at her, obviously annoyed she was skirting the main event. “I assume he’s being his usual big dick brotherly self, so you’re here to learn how to handle him. Or vent about him.”

“No. I mean, yes, he’s being his usual big dick brotherly self but that’s not why I’m here.” Ah hell, here goes. “I like someone, and I need advice about it.”

He inhaled a deep, give-me-strength breath. “Mia, I’m flattered but—”

“For the love of Gretzky, not you, Foreman.”

His brow darkened. “Is it someone on the Rebels roster? Because Vadim won’t like that.”

“God, no. Hockey players, ugh!”

“Present company excepted.”

She shook her head vehemently. “Present company most definitely not excepted. You and your ilk are so not what I’m interested in.”

He grinned and leaned back as if … oh, God … he was presenting all the action below the waist area. He actually liked her diss of his species. Probably saw it as a challenge.

“What’s so funny?”

“I love how you act like being with a jock is so beneath you. You’re a jock, Mia. You’re one of us.” He waved casually between them.

“Okay, but that’s only because I like sports and I’m excellent at my chosen one. However, I don’t have that jock brain cell that you all share and pass like a puck to each other on the ice.”

“I suspect I’m not smart enough to completely understand that, but did you just call me dumb?”

“If the skate fits.”

That made him laugh. It was a nice, warm, wrap-her-up-in-a-sweater laugh and she almost felt bad for calling him stupid because he wasn’t stupid. Not at all. Apparently he read books as big as toasters. But like his hockey brethren, he did have a one-track mind which is what she needed to groove into right this minute.

“So, how can I and the jock brain cell I’m currently renting from the cell pool be of service, Mia?”

“I like someone.”

His brow furrowed again. “Right, you said, but not a player. Because players, dummies, yes?”

She rolled her eyes. “Yes. This guy is kind of, uh, sophisticated, I suppose. And experienced. More experienced than me. I want to know what guys like.”

At which point dumber than a box of pucks Cal Foreman burst out laughing.

The Count's Castaway by Aubrey Wynne

Narrow escapes seem to be Count Alexandre Lecroix’s lot in life. Fleeing France as a boy during the Reign of Terror, he’s a man with no country and soon takes to the sea in search of his destiny. The Napoleonic Wars have filled his pockets and his zeal for excitement, but his heart remains hollow. When he discovers a feisty stowaway on board, he resists the squall of emotion she stirs within him.

Two lonely souls find passion in the turbulent waters of the Atlantic, each a fugitive of their past. As land draws near, Zander is torn between his desire for a woman and his hunger for the sea.

Can love survive once the ship has anchored, or will their newfound happiness founder?

Alexandre noticed the boy sidle into the room from the corner of his peripheral vision. He gave him a side glance as he spoke to Patch.

“I don’t recognize him.”

“Ah, the latest lubber the quartermaster took pity on. Orphan, it seems, and a young one. Came in earlier with another new hire. Funny thing, Captain, I thought the older one, Rorick, was the new ship’s boy, but he said it was this one.” Patch nodded toward the figure swabbing the deck. “Looks like the young-un needs to grow into his clothes.”

They both turned to study the boy who thrust the mop into the bucket. His shirt had been tucked in but still hung loose around his hips. While his height indicated a lad, something about his small hands piqued Alexandre’s curiosity. The skin was calloused, proving a past of physical labor, but the fingers were slender and the wrist small, almost delicate. There was a grace to his movements that reminded him of a… Sacre Dieu!

The youth had bent over to push the mop, and Zander saw the outline of a rounded bottom not even the loose trousers could hide. He mumbled a stronger curse under his breath. Finishing the conversation with Patch, he crossed the room and asked the boy his name.

“K.T.”

He stared at the bent head for a moment. Katie. Clever to come up with a moniker that she would always recognize. And how had she managed to hide away, then insinuate herself among his crew? Again, a clever lass. When their eyes met, her blue orbs darkened.

She knows she’s discovered, he thought.

Well, he’d allow her a slight reprieve until he had the particulars of her deceit. He finished their conversation and strolled from the room, a model of unconcern. Inside, he was seething, until the memory of their initial meeting teased his senses.

Her soft body fitted against his, that full lower lip trembling from his kiss, the taste of spiced citrus. Alexandre took a deep breath. He’d find out her story, then discipline whoever had helped her on board. He ran a tight ship. There was no way she’d made it on by herself.

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost ~ Book Review

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost ~ Book Review

Three reasons you should read this Paranormal Romance:

  • In Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost, Vlad is a strong alpha-male vampire with a shield around his heart, and he’s about to find out love isn’t the enemy.
  • Leila is an outspoken heroine with a vampire best friend that can match her snark for snark – the dialog was amazing.
  • The characters detest the modern Dracula stereotype, but somehow still manage to live up to it.

About Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

Title: Once Burned
Author: Jeaniene Frost
Series: Night Prince #1
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Once Burned by Jeaniene Frost

She’s a mortal with dark powers…

After a tragic accident scarred her body and destroyed her dreams, Leila never imagined that the worst was still to come: terrifying powers that let her channel electricity and learn a person’s darkest secrets through a single touch. Leila is doomed to a life of solitude…until creatures of the night kidnap her, forcing her to reach out with a telepathic distress call to the world’s most infamous vampire…

He’s the Prince of Night…

Vlad Tepesh inspired the greatest vampire legend of all—but whatever you do, don’t call him Dracula. Vlad’s ability to control fire makes him one of the most feared vampires in existence, but his enemies have found a new weapon against him—a beautiful mortal with powers to match his own. When Vlad and Leila meet, however, passion ignites between them, threatening to consume them both. It will take everything that they are to stop an enemy intent on bringing them down in flames.

My Review of Once Burned:

Vampires are real, and one just happens to be a little person in an acrobatic act for the circus. His partner is Leila, an unusual woman, but completely human. She can read people when she touches them and has the power of electricity in her touch. While her electrical ability sounds really cool, it means she can’t touch anyone without potentially killing them (hence the vampire acrobatic partner – he won’t die). But it’s the reading of people that gets her noticed.

A kidnapping, a rescue, some threats, and a long trip overseas finds her in the amazingly extravagant home of Vlad Tepesh – yes, THE Vlad Tepesh. He is determined to use Leila to find whoever is out to hunt him down, and also prevent them from using her to do the same to him. But first, they need to figure out who the bad guy is.

Vlad is a mercurial sort of vampire. He hides his heart from the world and refuses to let himself love anyone. But Leila intrigues him, and he soon finds that it might just be worth it to open himself up again. Leila challenges him on multiple emotional levels and never backs down from him – something that is usually a very dangerous thing to do.

Leila, and her friend Marty, made Once Burned for me. They are all the friendship goals in the world, and he better not die or I will be really upset. Vlad was fun, but also a bit of the vampire cliche – tall, dark, handsome, brooding, moody, violent. It didn’t seem like anything really new.

I’m excited to read the next book in the Night Prince series. I think there’s a lot of adventure and romance in store for Vlad and Leila, and I can’t wait to see how the battle plays out.

Above all, I hated the rule that we were not supposed to hang up on clients. It wasted time. Had I been allowed to just hang up, I would have wished him a good day, disconnected the call, and began the tedious process of adding notes to his file so the next customer service representatives stuck with him knew they had trouble on their hands.

My phone rang, but instead of a customer, my phone reported my boss wanted to speak with me. With slumped shoulders, I accepted his call and answered, “Sir?”

“I listened in on your Code Red.”

I hated when my boss actively monitored my calls; thanks to how the system worked, he could listen in on me at any time. But, a job was a job, and with my scarred face, finding a job became troublesome at best—and nobody in the call center knew or cared what I looked like. Oh, well. Before I jumped to conclusions, I’d ask. “What’s my grade, sir?”

“You did fine. You stayed professional, you didn’t come across as too condescending, and frankly, there’s no sane tech on this planet stays totally cool a Code Red. It could have been much worse.”

I checked the clock, breathing a sigh of relief that I’d hit the end of my shift and wouldn’t have to take any more calls. “What do you need?”

“I had a question about your schedule. You’re off for the next week, correct?”

“Yes, sir.” I had plans, and they involved the International Most Wanted List along with every legal bounty list I had managed to get my hands on in the past month. If my boss tried to put an end to my hard-earned vacation, I’d finally do what I should have done months ago, snap, and quit.

I wanted him to cross my last line so badly.

“Ted wants an extra shift. How would you feel about an unpaid day added to your vacation? I’ve already gotten approval if you’d like to claim the unpaid day.”

Score. I’d bid for time off almost a year ago, but sick days were the bare minimum the state allowed, which accounted to five for the entire year. An extra day tacked onto my vacation might let me bag an extra bounty.

Any day I bagged an extra bounty was a good day in my opinion.

“I can take an unpaid day, sir. That’s fine. Can you send me an email confirming the unpaid day off?”

“It’ll be in your inbox within the next ten minutes, and I’ll CC human resources notifying them you’re excused for that day.”

“Okay. Will the rest of my schedule remain the same once I’m back from vacation?”

“Yes. Ted just asked for extra hours, and the others with seniority declined the day off.”

I bet; on our income, every hour mattered. Most who worked for the call center had seen better days. I lived like I’d seen better days and I looked like I’d seen better days, but appearances lied. I only worked at the call center to maintain appearances. Thanks to depression in my teens and therapy that hadn’t gone like my parents had wanted, my entire family demanded I check in at least three times a week to ensure I remained human.

They believed if they took their eyes off me, I might shift into a lynx and never come back.

Two years ago, they wouldn’t have been wrong, but I’d found a new purpose in life.

BLANE

She’s back home.

My friend from a time that feels so distant is as beautiful and as kind as she was over five years ago, but her eyes now hold a confidence that didn’t use to shine there. Lana has returned as a fully independent woman sporting something hard that’s masking the pain that I know was etched in by her past.

And fuck if she isn’t sexier than I ever remember her being.

But after vanishing from my life without any sort of explanation or a goodbye, she’s come back home, and not for just a few nights of pleasure. She’s on a mission. One that has her diving into a world where danger lurks in its every corner. And even though I wish she wouldn’t keep her distance, I also know it might be for the best. Losing someone I care about again isn’t an option. But as more time passes, more worry creeps into my gut.

And when Lana allows me to get close to her in a way that destroys all boundaries of friendship, it becomes even harder to stay away.

Or rather fucking impossible.

LANA

I’m back home.

Trying to bring justice to my family should have been my hardest challenge once back in Texas. But the hardest part of being back home has been staying away from the friend I left behind all of those years ago.

I expected Blane to hold a massive grudge against me for disappearing without a word, but I should have known he would be there for me.

The grieving college student I met back then has become a brawny biker with a roughness and an intensity that slightly darkens his expression, but he instantly becomes like a rainbow to me, bringing colors to my dull, lonely days. That’s why it’s too bad that I have to keep him at a safe distance. And I was succeeding with flying colors until our chemistry explodes and I let myself crumble under the weight of my craving for him.

Now everything has lost its clarity, and the only part of my mind that’s not blurry with uncertainty is the one reminding me how much I want Blane in my life.

How much I care about him.

Julia Goldhirsh

The shadowy outline of a wooden sign with a book at its center came into view. Without thinking, she’d run to the library even though it was closed. Rose leaned against the closed door and slumped down to the ground. Sobs wracked her body, tears spilling out as she cried. “What am I going to do? I don’t know how to ride a horse. I’ve never even lived on my own. How am I supposed to do this without him?”

She’d hoped that Gabriel would stay with her, that he’d help her, but now she felt lost. Part of her wanted to give up, but the back of her mind chastised her. Pull yourself together. How can you help anyone else if you can’t even help yourself?  “Compose yourself.” She smacked her forehead with her open palm.

Hawthorn’s term for her came to mind. Nymph child. Maybe she could show Gabriel that they could do this together, that she could become strong enough for the both of them. She’d show him her magic, but first she’d have to learn how to access it.

Determined, she crossed her legs and closed her eyes, counting backward to calm her mind like she did when panic took control of her. “I’m only giving myself until then to cry; after that I need to pull it together. I must learn to do this myself. I have to be strong enough to protect us both,” she repeated to herself.

Ten, nine… As she counted, her breathing became less ragged and the shaking in her hands subsided. The ghost of Belladonna’s voice whispered, You can do this, my child.

She thought back to the weapons Belladonna and Nightshade had used. She pictured it in her mind and closed her eyes.

Energy coursed through her, raising the hairs on her arms. But when she looked at her palm, there was no weapon. She sighed and tried again. This time she focused on her hand. She pictured grey purple flowers of a Belladonna and the green stems they sprouted from.

When she opened her eyes, her nails were green. Not quite what she’d been hoping for, but it was a start.

She imagined the small hairs on a Belladonna flower and a tingling sensation shot through her fingers.

With her other hand, she stroked the top of her hand, now silky like the flower’s petals. Closer.

Each attempt made her breaths more labored, but she was no closer to using her magic. What am I doing wrong? It should be Belladonna magic, right?

A whispering voice rang through her mind. We are alike, but you aren’t me, little Rose Bud.

Her head whipped around searching for the source of the noise, but no one else was there. You’re probably just imagining her voice, she thought, but the strange whispers had made a valid point.

Maybe she needed rose magic. This time, instead of imagining herself like Belladonna or Nightshade, she thought about her namesake, the rose.

She imagined a short rose staff covered in thorns. Something thin but strong enough to be used as a weapon. Something bloomed, growing in her palm. When pain pricked her skin, she looked down and saw a small, thin whip about half a foot long and covered in thorns.

Red blood dripped from her palm, and she dropped the whip to the ground, but it didn’t dissipate.  Instead of gripping it with her entire hand, she reached down and grabbed one of the few spots that held no thorns, but the weapon swung back and forth and scraped her skirt.

Rose smiled. Even if it wasn’t as easy to handle as Belladonna’s or Nightshade’s weapons, she’d been able to create a nymph weapon. She really did have nymph magic flowing through her veins.

“Who are you anyway?” I asked.

“Andre,” he said. “Private Investigator, but I’ll do anything for money.” He winked.

“You’re not human,” I said. “What are you?” I stretched out my Charmed senses and felt magic within him.

“I’m a vampire, princess. Same as you, but with a little extra dark superpower. I’m a full vamp though, and from what I can tell from your dismal amount of speed out there, you’re half.”

He dragged a chair from the wall and sat across from me.

“You have the Dark Charm?” I asked. “I should have figured; you ooze sleaze bag.”

“And you have a little something special up your sleeve too, don’t you, princess? I bet you get a little hot now and then, don’t you?”

I narrowed my eyes.

“And with a name like Karolina Dalca . . . I bet you’ve got enough training to back up that look you’re giving me.”

He knew my name, my powers, and where to find me. My eyes fell over his body, sizing him up as he sat across from me. Strong jaw, tall, six feet and maybe four inches, and muscular broad shoulders. I could take him—if I took him by surprise.

Tara Heinz began her modeling career at the tender age of twelve. After spending fifteen years drooling over forbidden foods, she does the unthinkable. She enrolls in culinary school and becomes a pastry chef.

After a nasty breakup with her rock star boyfriend that leads to tabloid war, Tara takes a job at a rural lodge in Oregon to escape the spotlight she no longer desires.

James Cavanaugh is a farmer in Oregon. His days are spent building his business and his nights are spent sleeping, so he can get up at four in the morning.

Ruby Cavanaugh has plans for her son that involve her new pastry chef. Of course, neither James nor Tara know what’s going on until it’s too late.

After arranging an assortment of gourds on her newspaper-covered dining room table, Ruby picks up her telephone to call her oldest son, Brogan. “How are you and Addie doing?” she wants to know. As the first recipients of her matchmaking endeavor, the success of their union is integral to her confidence in setting up her younger son, James, with her new pastry chef.

“She’s great. We’re great. New York is beautiful in the fall.”

Whoever said glitter was the herpes of the crafting world never fully appreciated its hypnotic effects, Ruby thinks while spraying gold glitter paint. “I knew you two were meant to be.”

“I don’t know how you decided that, but I’m glad you did. For a while there I thought you were trying to set Addison up with James. Speaking of which, how are things going between him and Tara?”

“What do you mean?” Ruby asks, trying—and failing—to sound innocent.

“Don’t try to tell me you haven’t set your sights on her for my little brother.”

After several moments, Ruby dejectedly confesses, “It’s been hard finding ways to throw them together now that James’s farmstand is mostly closed for the season. I’ve had to resort to hiring your brother to put in a garden here at the lodge.”

“Interesting. I’m not sure I should offer, but let me know if I can do anything to help.”

“You and Addie are still coming home for Christmas, right?”

“Yes, ma’am. We arrive the second week of December and are planning on staying until the first week of March. I’ll be working on my new novel and Addie is going to commute to a hotel she’s redesigning in Portland.”

Ruby walks around the table, eyeing her decorative fall creation before firing off a final burst of sparkle. “I might need your help then. In the meantime, don’t bring up Tara’s name when you talk to James. I don’t want him to guess what I’m up to until it’s too late.”

“You make me nervous, Mom, but you did such a great job for me that I promise not to interfere in your latest project.”

“Good. Now, I’ve got to go. Your brother will be here any minute to meet with Tara about the dessert portion of the garden.”

“Does he know he’s meeting with her?” Brogan asks.

“Of course not. What fun would that be? Bye!” Ruby hangs up on her son before he has a chance to reply. After refreshing her lipstick and picking invisible lint from her sweater, she’s off to make another love connection.

Struggling to make ends meet, she’s determined to make a better life for herself. Desperate to rescue her little brother from the same troubled life she had growing up, Penny will do whatever it takes to make sure he’s safe. I think that if my family had died differently, or at least under better circumstances, I would have felt less angry. Better, maybe. More at peace. I don’t know, I guess that sounds pretty crazy. But I have to believe that if their deaths hadn’t been so fucking tragic, I could have accepted it and moved on. But I couldn’t and I never will. Because I just can’t. That’s why I was the way I was as I kid. That’s why I was the way I was as a teenager. That’s why I am the way I am now. Their deaths were a perfect illustration for the fucked up son and brother they got stuck with, and they paid the final price.

I’m just thankful I eventually got my life together. Finally pulled my head out of my ass. Somehow made it into a good college (my uncle helped with that, it pays to have connections), and that’s when things started to turn around. After years of beating myself up and hating myself, I finally figured out the secret to life. Stop giving a fuck. And I started funneling all my God-given energy into making something of myself. I live my life for me and no one else. This way I’m happy and no one gets hurt—Including myself. I keep everyone I know at arms-length and it works. I’m a damned successful executive of a damned successful corporation and I’m finally happy. After a life of torment and agony, I’m finally happy. I take what I want, pass on what I don’t, and naturally, I don’t do relationships. There’s no need for them—they only cause unhappiness which is what I’m looking to avoid. After getting a good job straight out of college (thanks again, Uncle Richard), I worked my ass off all the way to the marketing executive of a dominating online retailer, and my every dream has come true. I am exactly who and what I’ve always wanted to be. Until one day my entire fucking life was turned upside down.

So, that’s how I met the biggest pain in the ass I’d ever known—Penny Reynolds.
