Three reasons you should read this Contemporary and Historical Fiction:

  • An American in Paris by Siobhan Curham weaves the past of World War II in France with the story of a present-day former influencer in a seamless way.
  • Both the past and the present are amazing stories on their own, but when told together, they help bring each other to life in a new way.
  • I felt the past shone a little bit brighter in the story, but watching it through present-day story eyes gave it a new perspective.

An American in Paris by Siobhan Curham

As Nazi troops occupy the City of Lights, American journalist Florence is determined to do everything she can to save her adopted home and the man she loves.

Florence had arrived in Paris in 1937 and on a beautiful summer’s day, met and fell in love with Otto, a Jewish artist from Austria, who had fled persecution in his homeland. But as swastikas are draped along the city’s wide boulevards, everything Otto was running from seems to have caught up with him.

Both Florence and Otto begin lending their talents to the Resistance, working to sabotage the Germans right under their noses. Florence’s society columns that, before the war were filled with tales of glamorous Parisian parties, now document life under occupation and hide coded messages for those fighting outside France for freedom. While Otto risks arrest in order to pin up the anti-Nazi posters he designs by candlelight in their tiny apartment.

But with every passing day, things become more dangerous for Otto to remain in Paris. If Florence risks everything by accepting a secret mission, can she ensure his survival so that they can be reunited once the war is over?

My Review of An American in Paris:

Sage, an online influencer, has just ruined her so-called career. And while she’ll miss the money, she doesn’t really seem to care much. Well, the death threats and horrible comments on her social media are welcome to stop at any time.

But there’s a bright side to the debacle in a message from an American that says he may be connected to her past – and he has proof. So Sage takes off to discover her history, and along the way may just find out what she needs to know about herself as well.

Told in a dual POV between Sage (present-day) and Florence (WWII before and during the occupation of Paris), present an interesting story woven together by great love and great tragedy. The story of Frances and Otto is full of excitement, love, loss, and finding out what you are really capable of.

Frances’ and Otto’s story really seemed to take over the book. I think it would have been nice to see a little more from Sage in the present day. But we mostly just stop by to see how she is doing once in a while. The tragic romance of Florence and Otto is more than enough to make the book shine though. At times it just seemed like Sage was there because the author wanted this to be dual POV, and she didn’t really know what to do with her.

Florence led an extremely interesting and eventful life in Paris. Starting as a dance and ending up as an agent of the Britsh in France. Her journey from a fun-loving gal to a highly-skilled operative was all in the search for Otto their love. It was really amazing to see how strong their feelings were. And their dedication to each other was beautiful.

I don’t think I’ll ever look at a tree outside a window without crying and thinking of this couple. And if you read An American in Paris by Siobhan Curham, I don’t think you will be able to either.

Bossy Brothers: Luke by J.A. Huss

Two hot men seeking a fun, flirty girl with a sense of adventure. You in?

My life changed the day Zach Boston walked into it. And we’ve been inseparable best friends and lovers ever since. But he’s almost seven years younger than me and I remember all too well what my twenties were like – A new adventure every day, non-stop partying every night, and a new girl (or guy) whenever I got bored.

That’s why Zach and I always have a third.

Girls are how we’ve kept it fresh all year.

We’ve gone through dozens of them since we got serious and I’m not saying I don’t enjoy the dynamic of a threesome, because I do.

But when this cute girl with pink hair comes sailing into our lives and upends everything—I don’t know if we’ll survive it.

I’m studying the reef below me, trying my best to ignore what’s happening on the other side of the little waterfall lagoon with Luke, Zach, and Bart, but at the same time desperately trying to hear what they are all saying.

Bart is definitely coming on to Zach. And Luke is pissed.

Hell, I’m pissed. Zach is mine. He’s the only reason I’m here. I can deal with Luke. He could turn out to be a big, ol’ sexy bonus, even if he is kind of moody and distant.

But this Bart guy?

No. He was not part of my plan.

Suddenly Luke is below me in the water, his dark hair waving around his face, his finger pointing up.

I stop snorkeling and pull the mouthpiece out, then slide my mask up my face so I can see him better when he pops up in front of me. “What’s up?” I ask.

“We’re going to the party.” Luke nods his head in that direction. “Zach is already over there. With Bart.” He adds a little extra malice to the name Bart.

Luke’s eyes track over to the floating party platform where dozens of people are crowding. We both watch as Luke and Bart come to a stop in the shallows of the sandbar. Bart leaves his Seabob in the water and pushes Zach, making him stumble and laugh as they both wade their way towards the platform.

“Hmm,” I hum. Then I look at Luke. “Are we going to allow this?”

“We?”

“Hey, I wouldn’t be here if he didn’t want me here. And at least I’m on your side. Bart there, he’s just some random rich kid looking to get laid by the first shiny thing that catches his eye. Which would be Zach.”

Luke frowns at me. “You’re no different, Posie. Zach and I are partners. You’re his version of shiny. He’s with me.”

“He’s with Bart, Luke. And like I said, Zach wants me here. So looks like you need a little help in holding onto your man. I’m offering to be that help.”

Wow. I’m not really sure where that came from, but I like it. It’s gonna be a good quote for the article. One of those big ones in the middle of a wall of text. The kind with ginormous quotation marks framing it.

Anyway. Back to reality.

“But,” I continue, “I can just as easily stay on the yacht until we’re ready to go and you can handle things all by yourself, if that’s what you prefer.”

He glances over at Zach again. And Zach is laughing and smiling, like he’s completely unaware of the drama going on over here.

“I like him, Luke.”

Luke’s attention snaps back to me. “So? You’re no one, Posie. Just another girl we picked up in a club. Do you have any idea how many times we’ve done that? Dozens.”

“But I’m still here.”

“For today. Trust me, after we drop you off at home tonight, he’ll forget all about you and just start hunting down another girl.”

“To spice things up? Is he bored with you, Luke? Is this how you keep him?”

I’m pissing this guy off. It’s probably a bad idea. I’m hours away from the mainland, he’s like six-foot-three, almost twice my weight, and he’s my ride home. So it’s a very bad idea to pick this fight with him.

But he needs an ally. And I’m his only option. If I’m gonna position myself as a permanent fixture in Zach Boston’s life I need to jump the hurdle called Luke first.

And this stupid Bart guy is the perfect way to unite us so I can make that leap.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about. Zach and I have a lot more between us than sex. Our families are connected. Our business is connected. There are bigger things on our minds than who we’re sleeping with. This is just Zach being Zach. It’s just a game. But trust me, when it comes time to go home, he leaves with me, Posie.” He pauses. Then points his finger at me. “And I’m on to you.”

I scoff. “Whatever.”

“I see you, Posie. I have seen plenty of girls like you over the past year. You all think Zach is a prize to win. And don’t bother playing dumb. You know his last name is Boston. That’s the only reason you’re here, isn’t it?”

For a moment I panic, thinking Luke knows who I really am. He knows about the contract I have with Buzz Hollywood. He’s figured it out.

But then he says, “You’re looking for status. Money. You want to party with him, and get your picture taken, and use him to get something better. Climb some ladder you don’t have access to. Discard your boring, pathetic life and reinvent yourself a new one.”

“Wow,” I say. “You get mean when you’re jealous.”

“I’m not jealous.”

“Stop it, OK? I’m not here to steal him from you. I just like him. And I like you too. Enough to share. And isn’t that what he and you do? Hm? Share?”

Luke doesn’t react. Like at all. So I keep going.

“If we team up, then Bart doesn’t have a chance. Zach likes you, Zach likes me. He has a life with you—as you pointed out—and I’m the new flavor of the week. One he’s barely had a chance to taste. He wants us. We don’t need to fight over this. Yet.”

I pause to see if he’ll say anything about that. But he holds his words in, so I finish.

“We need to get him out of here. Because Bart over there?” I nod my head towards the crowd. “He lives in Zach’s world. Not ours. He’s one of the ruling class. You don’t need to talk to him to figure that out. He’s dripping with privilege. Just like Zach. They are of the same kind. And maybe Zach does love you, but this is his world, Luke. He’s not Zach, one half of your yacht charter service. He’s a Boston. He belongs here in this exclusive, secret pop-up party for the rich and bored—and we don’t.”

Luke lets out a long breath. Like he was holding it in while I talked. He’s gently waving his arms in the water. And I can feel the slight current his flippers make as we tread water in the middle of this beautiful waterfall cove.

He knows I’m right. Luke has a precarious hold on Zach Boston for now. But for how much longer?

They don’t have much time left by the looks of it. I’m no expert in relationships but I’ve been in enough of them to see the signs of one winding down. The bond between Luke and Zach is based on a lot of things—but it’s not love.

Mutual attraction, sure.

Family ties and all that business junk. Fine.

But that’s not eternal partner type stuff.

So all I have to do is hang around long enough to watch it break and then be there when Zach needs somewhere to turn.

Wow. I’m sorta ruthless when I’m focused.

Who knew?

She yawned as she closed the door, more exhausted than she had expected.  She fell asleep quickly and slept far better than she had the night before, then rose at the first gray light of dawn.  She went in to shower and get ready for the day, dressed in a conservative dark brown skirt suit and heeled pumps, then quietly cracked open the door to the living room.

Bran was already up, standing with his back to her, one hand on his hip, the other pressing his cell phone against his ear.  A pair of white cotton briefs that hugged his round behind was all he had on.

Jessie’s mouth went dry.  His suntanned back was smooth, except for a jagged scar on one side, and ridged with solid muscle.  Bands of muscle defined his shoulders and arms, and long sinewy legs tapered down to narrow feet.

She told herself to close the door before Bran caught her staring at him like a juicy piece of meat, but instead she just stood there, her heart pounding, her breathing a little ragged.

She was just pulling herself under control when he turned, the phone still pressed to his ear.  Jessie froze.  Her gaze shot to the heavy bulge at the front of his briefs and she felt a rush of heat so hot it made her dizzy.  Muscular pecs and six-pack abs.  A lean, hard-muscled chest and amazing biceps.  Desire hit her so hard she swayed on her feet.

She didn’t move till Bran jerked the blanket off his make-shift bed and wrapped it around his waist, knocking her out of her self-imposed trance and flushing her face with embarrassment.

“Sorry,” she managed to breathlessly whisper, stepped back and slammed the door.  Ohmygod, ohmygod.  She hadn’t felt the least attraction to a man for so long she’d forgotten what it was like.  Correction, she had never felt the jolt of desire she had felt looking at Brandon Garrett.  Ohmygod.

She told herself he was probably used to that kind of reaction from a woman, or at least the women who had seen him nearly naked.  Jessie sank down on the bed.  What could she possibly say to him?  How could she explain?

But no words of explanation popped into her head.

Since she couldn’t hide in the bedroom all day, and because Bran undoubtedly wanted to take a shower, she inhaled a deep breath, opened the door, and walked out into the living room.

“Sorry about that,” she said.

He had pulled on his jeans but the rest of him was still gloriously bare.  “No problem.  I should have grabbed one of those terrycloth robes in the bathroom.”

She just nodded.  “Yeah.”  Her fingers curled into the palms of her hands as she walked past him toward the counter where he had brewed a pot of coffee.

“Mind if I use the shower?” he asked.

“Of course not.  You’re paying for the room.”  When he opened his mouth, she held up a hand.  “Sorry, no more talk about money.”

“Exactly.”

She took a mug down from the cabinet above the sink and filled it with coffee, her hands still a bit unsteady.

“Why don’t you order us something to eat?” Bran suggested as he crossed the room toward the bedroom.  “I won’t be too long.”

“Bacon and eggs?” she asked.

“Sounds great.”  As he disappeared through the door and closed it behind him, Jessie sank down on one of the chairs at the dining table, coffee mug gripped tightly in her hands.  At least now she knew the abduction hadn’t completely destroyed her desire for the opposite sex.

Or at least one member of the opposite sex.  She grimaced.  She just wished the man who had rekindled her long-dead fire wasn’t Brandon Garrett.

Bran turned on the shower, set the nozzle to cold, and climbed in beneath the icy spray.  He clenched his jaw, fighting to block a memory of the look on Jessie’s pretty face when he had spotted her in the bedroom doorway.  Trying to block the erection he got every time the image reappeared in his head.

Bran knew women.  He knew when a woman wanted him.  He swore softly, cursing the fate that had brought the two of them together, putting them both in a situation that could only get worse.

So far he had managed to suppress the desire he’d felt from the moment Jessie had walked into his office.  With her fire-touched blond hair and fine features, she was beautiful.  He liked her body and admired her brain.  In a softly feminine way, she was sexy as hell, and he wanted her–no doubt about it.

But aside from the erotic dream he’d had about her last night, he’d been doing an admirable job of controlling his lust.

Until this morning.  When the flush in her cheeks and the heat in her eyes had made it clear that the desire he felt was returned.  She wanted him.  Which meant he had to be the strong one because no way could he have her and just walk away.

Jessie wasn’t the type he usually slept with, women who didn’t require exclusivity and didn’t expect to give it in return.

He was fairly sure Jessie hadn’t been with a man since she was abducted.  He sure as hell didn’t want to be the first, didn’t want to deal with whatever trauma she had experienced, maybe make it worse.

This is thirty-two. It’s completely normal to want to be alone on your birthday, right? (She asks her 5 followers.)

I know my plans for a quiet evening watching TV have been thwarted as soon as I slide the key into the door and hear Matilda’s hushed voice telling—no, ordering—Silas to be quiet. A part of me wants to slowly back away from the door and escape to the diner down the street. Or I could go eat my cold leftovers on a park bench because who doesn’t want to do that on their birthday? A party sounds like the absolute worst right about now. But if my best friend went to the trouble of filling up my apartment with people who want to celebrate the day I was born for some reason, the least I can do is be grateful and play along. I take a deep breath and open the door.

“Surprise!”

Indeed it is. And what a relief—there are only two people in my apartment, and it happens to be my neighbors from across the hall. I walk into Matilda’s and Silas’s open arms for a group hug, silently grateful I won’t have to pretend I ran out of good wine as I pour out the cheap stuff into plastic flamingo tumblers. And I also won’t have to tidy up. Now that I look around, my apartment looks cleaner than it was before I left. My collection of Designer Daily magazines is neatly stacked on the coffee table instead of scattered on the floor. And there’s the unmistakable aroma of ginger and citrus in the air—Matilda’s favorite designer room spray.

“Did you clean my apartment?” I ask.

Matilda nods, a satisfied grin on her face. “Remember when I said you’d get the rest of your gift on your actual birthday?”

“Of course,” I lie. I’d forgotten about that particular conversation—probably because I overdid it on Pretty in Pink Passion cocktails when she dragged me to a club on Friday night. A large part of that evening remains a blur.

“Well, this is it. I cleaned this place top to bottom and reorganized your bedroom closet and your kitchen cupboards.”

“You are an angel,” I say, which is what I always tell Matilda whenever she does this—the urge to clean is strong with this one. You’d think I wouldn’t like having someone rummage through my apartment and dust-busting every shameful nook and cranny, but in addition to being my best friend, Matilda is also a professional organizer and a proud neat freak. Rearranging a pantry is her idea of a good time, and since I’m such a good friend, I let her go crazy in my closets.

“Oh. And I got you gummy bears,” Silas says, handing me a small gift bag. “I’ve been told to tell you not to eat the entire bag in one sitting.”

Zero guarantees.

I eat candy like it’s a medication keeping me alive. I’ve tried many times to kick the habit, but I always end up at the bodega across the street throwing bags of sour gummy worms on the counter and ripping into them before I even get back home.

“Thank you, Silas.” These aren’t the generic gummy bears I’m used to. They’re made with rosé wine and covered in pink edible glitter. These babies are definitely not surviving the night.

“No problem. Let me go see if I can help M in the kitchen,” Silas says.

“Does Matilda allow you to call her M?” I ask with a wink.

Silas laughs. “It’s tolerated, at best.”

As someone who’s been called by a nickname her entire life, I can’t understand Matilda’s aversion to being called anything other than her baptismal name. We were allowed to call her Tilly—her childhood nickname—for a while, but it recently became blacklisted again after someone (me) decided to rhyme it with silly and turn the whole thing into a Broadway show tune that I kept singing over and over again whenever she came over. Leave it to me to ruin a good thing for everyone.

Silas and Matilda have been dating for a little over a year, and they are the perfect example of completely opposite people coming together and making a perfect couple. And, yes, I am gagging at the words perfect couple. (And rolling my eyes too—that’s how nauseating their cuteness is.) Somehow, they make it work even though he’s messy and distracted and the kind of person who can lose his phone and wallet in the span of a few hours. She’s his calm and levelheaded counterpart who’s never misplaced anything in her entire life but knows exactly what to do and who to call when you lose your phone and wallet.

Relic Bounty by Arwen Paris

Kill the courier, retrieve the relic, collect the money.

Bounty hunter Janis Torzen finally has a chance to free himself from his indentured servitude to the mob. The brutal weather on planet Urrak is as unforgiving as the mob boss Janis Torzen works for, so of course a sudden sandstorm upsets his best laid plans. To make things worse, the courier, Everell, turns out to be a beautiful, smart-mouthed archeologist who has her own plans for the money. Unfortunately, powerful people will kill to possess the relic Everell carries—everyone from government officials to the social elite, and they will stop at nothing to get it.

Now on the run, Janis and Everell are forced to depend on each other to escape from Nadir Space Port. But when Everell and the relic are stolen from Janis, he must go back to the very man he’s trying to get away from and offer a deal with the devil. He’s got nothing to lose but his own life, so he bluffs the mob, willing to sacrifice his future to save the woman he’s fallen in love with—a woman he’s still not sure he can trust.

It’s a crazy plan, one so crazy it just might work. If he succeeds, it will pay out big for his wallet and his heart—if he doesn’t die trying. But with a bounty this high, it’s worth any risk…
