Amina is special – or as her father would say – a freak. With the ability to move things with her mind, she dreams of joining the Interplanetary Peace Squad, but her family won’t hear of it. So she sneaks away one night, takes a leap of faith, and joins the training program. This beginning portion of the book was a bit choppy and rough. The initial interactions Amina had with people at the training program were a bit cliched. They were very stereotypical – the shy girl, the flirty rich girl, the cute slightly older guy every girl wanted.

Once we got more into the heart of the story, things took a really great turn for the better. People started becoming a little more dynamic (but still a tad on the cliche side), and personalities started showing up. Amina is assigned her first training mission, and she has a chance to show the crew and her captain (the hot guy everyone wants) that she can handle herself. And she handles herself well, but not perfectly – which is great.

The romance that has been budding throughout the story didn’t always seem to fit in. There were too many times that the mission should have fallen apart because of the flirty-times going on. Eventually, the romance starts to straighten itself out, and by the end, I felt more like it was a natural thing between the two characters. But getting there was a bit rough.

Genre: Historical Romance

The Dark Duke they call him.

And he certainly matches up to his name. From his looks to his constantly furrowed brow, Miss Beatrice Edgerton is under no illusions as to the status of their arranged marriage.

It will be very much one of convenience. With him conveniently providing the title her family so desperately wants and her family bringing in plenty of money for his dilapidated home. She is simply grateful he is younger than her first husband.

Lord Morton, Duke of Hartwich, is only a little perturbed by the vibrant Beatrice. After all, he sets her straight from the very first day of their marriage—this is one of mutual benefit. In one way only. She can expect no affection or romance from him.

Because, frankly, he is incapable of such things. Being a one-legged duke with a slightly dark past brings enough challenges without him having to worry about a wife too. His days of concern for anyone are long gone.

Unfortunately, It is not only the duke’s dark demeanor she has to deal with. Someone is trying to cause trouble for them but they cannot fathom who or why.

Grace is determined to make the best of the situation, even whilst spending Christmas with the duke alone in the eerie Hartwich Hall. Why, perhaps she might even be able to change the duke’s mind about their relationship.

Especially after they share a fiery kiss…or three…

“I’m very tired,” she said through a yawn.

“You need to stay awake, Bea. You may have a concussion.”

“Concussion?” Her words sounded slurred to her but she was not certain they actually were.

“When one is struck on the head, it can make one feel a little strange. I have suffered it myself falling from horses.”

“Oh.” She put an arm over her face to block out the unwelcome light but Adam pulled her arm away from her face and she scowled at him.

“You need to stay awake, Bea. Just until we can be certain you are feeling better.”

“I would rather sleep,” she muttered.

“Mrs. Howard, will you get some ice and tea, please?”

Bea didn’t see the housekeeper leave but she heard her footsteps scurrying off. Adam cupped her cheek and she sank gratefully into the comforting warmth of his touch. “You are quite handsome,” she said softly.

“And you are still charming somehow.”

“I like it when you touch me.”

A smile grazed his lips. “I like touching you.”

“See? That was not so hard to admit was it?”

“Especially because you will likely not remember a thing of what you said tonight.”

“I know exactly what I am saying,” she declared, although the words did seem strange and still incoherent. She yawned and closed her eyes.

“Tell me of this intruder.”

Opening her eyes, she frowned. “It was dark but he was tall.”

“Taller than me.”

“Yes. No…Perhaps.” She let her eyelids flutter shut and found the darkness behind them quite pleasant.

“Anything else you can recall?” she heard him say but it was too hard to respond. Her jaw felt heavy and her tongue thick. “Bea?” A hand tapped her cheek and she ripped her eyes open.

“Stop,” she protested.

“You need to tell me all, Bea.”

“He seemed skinny but strong. He pushed me hard.” She forced her attention to his concerned features. “Adam, will you let me sleep with you tonight? I do not want to be alone.”

His lips tilted. “You will not be alone. I promise.”

“Good.”

Overruled by Fate by Leila Snow: Book Review

Overruled by Fate by Leila Snow: Book Review

I feel like Overruled by Fate really hit the nail on the head with how living as nobility – or within the world of the nobility – really was. Madeline is told she will be marrying a much older man – and she’s lucky that he’s a good man. Her feelings are not taken into consideration, because her father knows what’s best for her. Only too late does she realize that her feelings for her childhood non-noblility companion are much more that she first believed.

Said childhood companion, Nathaniel, has known his feelings, but he also accepts his place and knows that nothing will come of them – at least he thinks he’s accepted it. When Madeline’s marriage is announced he goes off the deep end. And while I appreciate his feelings and need to drown his sorrows – his method of drowning said sorrows left me with a bad taste in my mouth for him. And he doesn’t really improve much until the very end. While this was probably very historically accurate – I wanted I little bit more out of my hero than I got.

It took a long time for the HEA to appear. And I really appreciated that. It wasn’t easy for this couple, but even when it was hard, the author found highlights and good things for them to be occupied with. There was plenty of pining for each other and scheming at times, and when the king makes an appearance I just felt awful for Madeline (but no spoilers so I can’t tell you why).

There is plenty of intrigue, betrayal, plots and plans woven into the storyline that wrap around our main characters, forcing them to make hard decisions and sometimes take paths they wouldn’t have otherwise chosen. When our couple does finally get together (this is a romance after all), it was sweet and touching. I felt like they had finally beat the odds stacked against them. A great story that has a feeling of epicness to it.

Title: Overruled by Fate
Author: Leila Snow
Genre: Historical Romance, Medieval Romance

Nathaniel and Madeline are childhood companions, though mismatched to be sure. He is the son of a servant and she, the daughter of the Lord of the castle. Nevertheless, they are inseparable, each unaware of the deep emotions of the other until it is too late. One stolen night is all they are granted before Madeline is given in marriage to the wealthy and titled, Earl of Marbourne, who is fast friends with the king.

A whirlwind of intrigue and contrivance follows Nathaniel and Madeline as they join the court and Madeline catches the eye of the king. A story of love, lust, betrayal, greed, and even murder. It seems that the twists and turns of cruel fate conspire to keep Madeline and Nathaniel apart despite their desperate love.

A Wolfe Among Dragons by Katheryn Le Veque: Book Review

A Wolfe Among Dragons by Katheryn Le Veque: Book Review

Picture

This was my first book in the Wolfe Pack series by Kathryn Le Veque. When she says they can be read as stand alones – she’s correct. While there may be a little family history that is missed, for the most part, I didn’t feel like I was missing out for starting not at the beginning.

It all starts with a battle, leading to missing memories, deception, love, more battles, finding truths, and so much more. Blayth is a bit of a mystery man, he remembers nothing of his life before a few years ago when he recovered from a very serious head wound. Everything he knows about himself has been told to him, and not by the most reliable person. His struggle to find who he really is, is a key part of the story. Le Veque did a fantastic job showing his struggle with reconciling what he is learning to be true with the lies he has been told.

The Dragon Princess is a legend in her own right. Asmara has worked hard to earn her name and place among the Scottish warriors – none of which have even had a chance at capturing her heart. But the strong and silent Blayth with the mysterious past works his way under her skin. She is instrumental in helping him discover the lies he has been told and finding the courage to look for the truth. I loved their conversations. Both the serious and fun only proved to me again that these two were meant for each other.

There were a few times that Asmara and Blayth had to lie as they looked for the truth – and those lies seemed to have caught up with the author. In a few scenes, people suddenly knew the truth when they had been told something different – nothing huge or story-breaking, but it did make me go a re-read part to make sure I hadn’t missed something.

Title: A Wolfe Among Dragons: Sons of de Wolfe (de Wolfe Pack #8)
Author: Kathryn Le Veque
Genre: Historical Romance, Medieval

Get ready for perhaps the greatest de Wolfe adventure yet….

The sons of William de Wolfe (The Wolfe) are immortal, so they say. Men who are known as ShadowWolfe… DarkWolfe… Nighthawk… are as legendary as their father. The eldest four sons – Scott, Troy, Patrick, and James have always run in a pack. They are all to each other, in both brotherhood and in strength. But in 1282 A.D., James de Wolfe, the endearing and gentle brother, is killed in Wales as the Welsh rebel against Henry III.

… or was he?

Tales of a Welsh warrior known as Blaidd Cryf, or Blayth the Strong, are making way to English ears along the Welsh Marches. It’s 1286 A.D., and a Welsh warrior who can somehow read the minds of the English armies is rising to power among the last princes of Wales. With Blayth leading the Welsh armies, the English are being handed defeat after defeat. No one knows who Blayth is, or where he’s come from, but the English warlords are coming to realize that they will lose Wales once and for all if Blayth and his brilliant tactics aren’t stopped.

No one seems to realize that Blayth (the phoenetic pronunciation for Blaidd, meaning wolf in Welsh) may be the most deadly warrior Wales – and England – has ever seen.

Bhrodi de Shera, the hereditary King of Anglesey and husband to Penelope de Wolfe de Shera, youngest daughter of William de Wolfe, has no real grasp of who Blayth the Strong really is. An icon for his people, Bhrodi has been instrumental in helping the Welsh and English peacefully co-exist, and he very much wants all of Wales to know peace with England, but with Blayth leading a resurgence of rebellion along the border, Bhrodi seeks to meet with Blyth to discover who this man is and what he truly wants – a fractured Wales? Or is he determined to unit Wales under his rule?

When Blayth finally appears at Bhrodi’s stronghold of Rhydillian Castle, his identity is shrouded in mystery. It is said that the English, if they discover him, will execute him without question, so Blayth is well protected by his contingent of teulu. But when Penelope catches of a glimpse of the man who has single-handedly caused a resurgence of Welsh rebellion, she can hardly believe her eyes.

Lazarus has indeed arisen – and her brother, James, is back from the dead.

Discover the epic adventure of A Wolfe among Dragons, a tale of mystery, of hope, and most of all, of romance and redemption. When a dead son returns, it can be the greatest of joys and the deepest of tragedies. A Wolfe Among Dragons is truly a story for the ages.

Rescuing Riley by S.B. Alexander: Book Review

Rescuing Riley by S.B. Alexander: Book Review

Picture

Rescuing Riley was a fun and exciting adventure – even if it seemed a little over the top in the unrealistic realm of things. When Riley comes to visit her best friend Liza and finds out she’s disappeared, she is set on finding her and figuring out just what the heck is going on. But Liza’s cousin, Ex-Navy SEAL Joshua, along with his service dog are supposed to keeping an eye on her.

There are tons of roadblocks along the way, including an annoying assistant that never seems to tell the truth.  And when Riley repeatedly runs headlong into trouble even though she’s warned not to – I started to get a little annoyed with her too. If the SEAL and the FBI are telling you it’s dangerous, then you might want to listen to them.

I enjoyed some of the story, and didn’t enjoy the rest of the story. I’m glad I read it because the Gold Coast Retrievers is a great series, and I love how the characters connect with each other from book to book. I just wish I could have liked this one a little bit more.

A Dash of Christmas by Samantha Chase: Book Review

A Dash of Christmas by Samantha Chase: Book Review

Picture

I love a good holiday romance – especially one that manages to make the holiday an integral part of the story without losing track of the people and things surrounding it. A Dash of Christmas does an amazing job of bringing out the Christmas without letting it take over too much.

Emery Monaghan is having a really rough go of life right now – and because of her crappy fiancé’s governmental position, it’s all out there for the public to see. When she sees a chance to hide away from all the prying eyes and get away from her horrid family and maybe to a little good, she jumps at the chance. The chance leads her right into the not-so-waiting arms of Carter Montgomery – chef extraordinaire – who has promised to make a charity cookbook for his mother.

These two have a past, and it’s a fun one. Both jealous of each other for a variety of reasons, both secretly liking each other, but always seeming to be at odds and arguing with each other. As they work together, they open up about their dreams, desires, pasts, and present. All while planning a huge holiday dinner to test and show off the recipes they’ve planned for the charity cookbook.

But Carter is driven, and he has a new restaurant that he must open – to prove to the world that he will never stop succeeding. And Emery is determined to prove she can stand on her own and make her own decisions. But are exceedingly stubborn, and when an exceptionally heated argument drags into not speaking to each other, I began to wonder if it would all work out.

Samantha Chase does a fantastic job of bringing our couple together, pushing them apart, and making them better people. All while weaving an intricate web of family and holiday shenanigans around them, setting the stage for a beautiful romance with just the right touch of Christmas magic.

The single slip of manila paper says only two words: “your next.”

Right away, a few things are apparent: this person’s command of the English language is severely lacking; the scrawl is most likely that of a teenage boy or a toddler of any gender; and thirdly, this note is different from the others. I glance around the brick pillar at the front of our house. The street is silent; not one person is outside from where I stand.
I ball the paper up and toss it in my purse.

I slide into the car beside Stacey and we head to the restaurant—in absolute silence. Silence has many forms. The form we exhibit is awkward—at least for best friends.

We both know why we’re going today. Stacey doesn’t agree with my sentiment for the day, though. I’ve read that if you toss a being outside their natural habitat, one of two things will happen—they will rise to the occasion, or die.

I’m a fighter. I should be able to master the social landscape of female teenagerdom, but it seems I can’t. I flounder—a lot. I cannot explain my high intellect and my innate ability to elicit cringes or gasps of shock when I speak.

Today, that changes.

Once we’re at the restaurant, Stacey says only four words: “This is ridiculous, hon.”

I disagree and we head inside to meet the other girls.

We arrive mid-joke. So, I time my laugh to spill from my lips at the perfect moment.

Except, the sensation rises from my abdomen like gravel tumbling through my mouth. Stacey turns, her lips pursed tight. The other girls stop giggling. Their purrs of laughter are in deep contrast to my piercing cackle.

They frown in unison—everyone but Stacey. She has an ‘I’m sorry I got you into this mess, hon’ look on her face. Though lacking in most social skills, I’m able to read their expressions: ‘What the hell was Stacey thinking, bringing the schizoid?’

I’m painfully aware something is off with me. On a scale of weirdness, I’m not Pinhead. I’m more Carrie, without the powers. I’d change this perception of oddness I convey, but I don’t know where to begin to work on myself. That’s why I’m here today.

Glancing around the table, I attempt a quick recovery. Dogs. Girls like dogs. “I have a dog. He’s the cutest little Pomeranian.”

My words are met with oohs and awws, but Stacey shakes her head once, slightly. I don’t know why she does it. I’ve hit a chord with these girls. I block her shaking head and the bombardment of senseless information streaming through my mind, and continue talking. “He’s a handsome little fur ball.”

“I love dogs,” one of Stacey’s friends says. “My Jax is too freaking cute.”

“My FeFe is too adorbs. What’s your dog’s name, Elizabeth?” Melissa, the closest girl to me asks.

“Norman Bates. He’s a—”

“You named your dog Norman Bates?” Melissa asks.

“Yes. He—”

“Like, isn’t that the crazy dude from that movie? The one who cross-dressed like his mom and like killed everyone?” someone else asks.

“Yes, it’s—”

“It’s kinda weird… well, a lot weird that you named your dog after a homicidal maniac,” Melissa says. No one speaks after her comment. They all stare in opposite directions.

I almost laugh at their reaction, but stop myself. A rush of thoughts hurry through my head: Melissa’s eyes are the color of her heart—black. She’s a modern Cruella DeVille. She’ll trample over her own mother to get what she wants, which is always materialistic and selfish. She’s also beautiful, and she hates me but loves my best friend Stacey.

I shake my head discreetly. They act like I told them I’m naming my firstborn Freddie Krueger. Which I would do, if I could have kids.

I strum my fingers over my jean shorts and count in my head. Counting reminds me not to speak and further add to the awkwardness of the moment.

“Norman Bates is the best dog name, ever,” Stacey says. She gives me a wink. “More importantly, has anyone seen that new movie? You know… the new romance?” Stacey snaps her fingers like she can’t remember. “Oh, I forget the name. But I heard it’s hot—full of steamy love scenes…” Everyone starts talking, each girl stumbling over the other to get a word in. Like if they don’t articulate what they have to say straightaway, their lives might be in peril.

I don’t understand girls, even though I’ve been part of the gender my entire life.

Tyrabbisaurus Rex by A.J. Culey: Book Review

Tyrabbisaurus Rex by A.J. Culey: Book Review

Picture

I picked up Tyrabbisaurus Rex for my eight-year-old at PennedCon earlier this year and read it once evening before dinner. It was such a fun book. As an adult, I really enjoyed it, and when I got home, and my son read it, he enjoyed it as well.

“Cuddles,” as the children have named him, is a class pet, a rabbit that truly believes that it is a T-Rex. The book alternates between his POV and those of the children in his classroom. The rabbit’s chapters and internal dialog are hilarious and very entertaining as he tries to escape his captivity and try new things to nibble on.

The children all have their own opinions about Cuddles, and their chapters show those very well. From absolutely wanting nothing to do with him, to thinking he’s pretty cool but not that interesting, to wanting to spend all their time snuggling him – the students and Cuddles interact along with the teacher to create an entertaining story that delicately touches on quite a few things. From making friends, death in the family, self-esteem, and self-image (of the rabbit).

I highly recommend this for boys and girls in the early grade school years. It’d make an excellent read-along for adults and children to experience and talk about together.

Genre: Children’s Book

Tyrabbisaurus Rex doesn’t appreciate being locked in a cage. Sure it has three levels and is full of scrumptious veggies, but that doesn’t mean he’s willing to accept his fate as a classroom pet.

Ginger’s not happy about the always escaping, poopy rabbit. First he chewed the dress her mom gave her. Now he keeps staring at her favorite hat. The demon bunny has got to go!

Beast: A Tale of Love and Revenge by Lisa Jensen: Book Review

Beast: A Tale of Love and Revenge by Lisa Jensen: Book Review

Picture

My daughter bought me this book for my birthday – and she knows what I like to read. Fairy tale adaptions are sooo much fun, and this take on Beauty & the Beast did a fantastic job.

The atmosphere of the book was exceedingly gothic, and the people and scenery seemed very French (to my uneducated eye). So the stage was set – and in comes Lucie, a girl looking to escape her step-father and find a way to earn her way in the most respectable of ways. She manages to find a job as a cleaning maid at Chateau Beaumont only to find that Chevalier de Beaumont is a monster of a person. He enjoys the misery and pain of others and looks only to further himself.

Enter the curse – the one we’ve seen many times. And suddenly the Chevalier is no more, and in his place is Beast. Lucie watches over Beast in a transformed state herself, but this is where the story takes a new and exciting turn of events.

I love how Lisa Jensen incorporated the roses and Beast’s love for them. I love the little twists and turns she put on the curse to make it unique and surprising. And I loved it when she introduced Rose. So we have two potential Beauties, which is not a way to make this some kinky ménage. It’s just a way to show Beast’s desire for companionship.

The ending was nothing like I expected at all. And I will also add a trigger warning for rape, suicide, and abortion topics.

Title: Beast: A Tale of Love and Revenge
Author: Lisa Jensen
Genre: Fairy Tale Re-Telling

They say Château Beaumont is cursed. But servant-girl Lucie can’t believe such foolishness about handsome Jean-Loup Christian Henri LeNoir, Chevalier de Beaumont, master of the estate. But when the chevalier’s cruelty is revealed, Lucie vows to see him suffer. A wisewoman grants her wish, with a spell that transforms Jean-Loup into monstrous-looking Beast, reflecting the monster he is inside. But Beast is nothing like the chevalier. Jean-Loup would never patiently tend his roses; Jean-Loup would never attempt poetry; Jean-Loup would never express remorse for the wrong done to Lucie. Gradually, Lucie realizes that Beast is an entirely different creature from the handsome chevalier, with a heart more human than Jean-Loup’s ever was. Lucie dares to hope that noble Beast has permanently replaced the cruel Jean-Loup — until an innocent beauty arrives at Beast’s château with the power to break the spell.

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn: Audiobook Review

The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn: Audiobook Review

Picture

A lot is going in The Woman in the Window. Anna fox has experienced a trauma, and now she has very severe agoraphobia. She wanders her house alone (living with just her cat) drinking and not quite taking her medication correctly. The circumstances leading up to her situation are vague, and we slowly learn everything as the story continues.

She passes her time watching her neighbors – like hardcore spying on them with a zoom lens – playing chess and learning French online, and talking to other agoraphobics in an online community. She’s happy – mostly – and chats with her family quite often.

A.J. Finn does a fantastic job of drawing you into Anna’s strange world and making you doubt everything you think you know. As we spiral through life and the strange things Anna has witnessed right along with her. I enjoyed being able to follow her train of thought. It brought me into her mind and emotional turmoil when she started doubting everything about herself.

While most of the book is a meandering journey through potential craziness, the end was a heart-pounding rush leading up to a gentle settling of sorts. Don’t expect too much action and thrills from this one. But don’t discount its ability to test what you believe right along with all the characters.

Title: The Woman in the Window
Author: A.J. Finn
Genre: Thriller

Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors.

Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, a mother, their teenage son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble—and its shocking secrets are laid bare.

What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems.
