Helping Hanna by Emmie Lyn: Book Review

Picture

A bit of a damsel in distress, Hanna, needs to be rescued story, but the rescuer is her grandfather’s golden retriever, Bella, who starts the book out with a bang by rescuing her from a getting hit by a car. This sets off a bit of an adventure as Hanna tries to avoid her crazy stalker ex-boyfriend with the help of Blake, the son of a friend of the family and a private investigator on vacation.

This had the potential to be a really amazing story, but Hanna wasn’t what I needed her to be. She was too headstrong and unwilling to take the advice of the experts who trying to protect her. Putting herself in danger and staying by herself even though she knew her ex was looking for her and had found her several times already.

Blake is also trying to avoid an ex, but for very different reasons. She cheated on him but his family is determined to help her win him back. Now I really don’t like his family at all, and Hanna’s family was sort of in the same area with their feelings towards Hanna’s ex. Everyone was just not very good. Blake’s ex quicky notices his developing feelings for Hanna and uses his family to make it look like they are happily together still, but Hanna never really questions it or looks beyond the surface.

While in the end Hanna stood up for herself and started becoming the intelligent and self-sufficient woman I feel like she should have been the whole time, it was too little too late.

Finding Felicity by P. Creeden: Book Review

Finding Felicity by P. Creeden: Book Review

Picture

Felicity and her Golden Retriever, JJ, work with special needs children in the school district. They are both super sweet souls, and from the very beginning, I knew I was going to love them. My heart broke for her when she found out that her birth mother had died – she not only mourned the person but the future possibilities of getting to know her better.

As she digs deeper into her birth mother’s life, Felicity is convinced that she didn’t commit suicide. Everything about her personal belongings and journals points to a woman content and happy with her life. But there’s only one person who thinks she might be onto something. Thankfully, that’s Officer Darren Willis, the detective in charge of the investigation. But his boss is pressuring to close this supposedly open and shut case quickly.

Felicity digs in and keeps looking, finding herself the target of several deadly incidents. Darren and Felicity come together through the tragedy and danger – with JJ right by her side – and find their feelings for each other grow daily.

Unfortunately, I figured out the who-dun-it way too early. The only reason this didn’t get a 5-star review. I like to have the mystery remain just that – a mystery – until the characters are just about to figure it out – not right at the beginning of the case. The romance though – the romance was strong in this one, and it was lovely. I highly recommend if you don’t mind figuring things out too soon.

Protecting Peyton by Becky Muth: Book Review

Protecting Peyton by Becky Muth: Book Review

Picture

Peyton and her dog, Gilda, are trained in search and rescue, and they are really good at it. So good, that Gilda manages to save a man without Peyton even realizing what was actually going on. Kurt, the man rescued, is rather annoyed with the pair because he didn’t realize he was being rescued either. They both walk away upset and hope to never see each other again. But we wouldn’t have much of a romance if that happened.

They find their paths crossing again when Peyton reports her brother missing. While Kurt (a police officer) isn’t directly assigned to the case, he finds himself wanting to prove to her and the rest of the department that he can be a good detective. The case is a tough one because Kurt seems to have vanished into thin air – not wanting anyone to find him.

The suspense and mystery in this sweet romance was just the right level. An intricate part of the story, but it still served to help bring our couple together. Peyton’s reasons for disappearing felt a little far-fetched, as do some of the scenes at the college he worked at. Peyton won me over from page one, and I felt every emotion right along with her through every page. While Kurt starts out as a bit of a jerk, he’s quick to admit when he was wrong, which is a huge mark in his favor. I loved these two together – hopefully, I’ll see them in the background of another Gold Coast Retriever romance.

I met my little pixie in a coffee house and we hit it off right away. That is, until she saw me shoot someone. But in my defense, they were coming to rob the coffee shop. Who does that? Now, I’ll do anything to get her back and make her realize that she’s mine. Kidnapping? I’m not too good for that. Getting shot? Play up the sympathy card. Marry her? You’re damn straight I will. Lay down my life for her? In a heartbeat. I would do anything for this woman and I will make her mine.

Reese
It was one non date. We had coffee together. After we bumped into each other. It was more of a meet-cute than anything. It was fun until I realized how very naive I was. I mean, the man said that he had a gun on him and I laughed it off like an idiot. Who actually carries around a gun with them. Apparently, everyone from Reed Security. But I didn’t see that, and now I have a stalker. Not just any stalker though. This man takes everything to the extreme. But I can survive him. I will survive him. And when all is said and done, I’ll go back to my life and the boring men I date. Right?

“Reese!”

I ran to catch up to her outside the school she taught at. I had Becky run a background check on her so I could find out where she lived and worked. I figured it would be a little creepy to show up at her house, but work was good. There were other people around and she would feel safe.

I took in every inch of her as she turned toward me. She was short, maybe 5’ 3”, but she was so damn beautiful. She was curvy and had blonde hair in one of those pixie haircuts. It looked damn good on her too.

She turned and her eyes widened. She looked around quickly, so I followed her gaze, thinking she saw something suspicious. “What’s wrong? Is someone after you?”

“No,” she said incredulously. “Why would you assume that?”

“Because you were looking around, like there was danger or something.”

“Yeah, you’re the danger! Why are you here?”

“Because I wanted to talk to you. I feel like we got off on the wrong foot in the coffee shop and you’ve been ignoring my calls-”

“Because I didn’t give you my number.”

“Well, I didn’t get it on our date-”

“We never had a date. Look, it was nice to meet you, but there’s nothing going on between us. We aren’t dating.”

I scratched the back of my neck, not sure why she was denying what I saw clear as day. “Okay, I can see how you would think that there’s nothing between us. I mean, high intensity situations cause stress on new relationships.”

“We’re not in a relationship.”

“But we could be,” I grinned. “See, I think you’re not really giving me a chance here. We had a connection back in that coffee shop.”

“What we had was some banter before I found out that you murder people for a living!”

I shook my head slightly. “See, that’s not entirely accurate. First, I told you that I worked in security, and I even told you that sometimes I took out the bad guys. I never lied about that. And second, I never ever murder anyone. I strategically take out people that should otherwise be dead or imprisoned because they’re really bad people.”

She stared at me dumbfounded and I grinned, thinking I had gotten through to her. “I don’t believe it.”

“You’re starting to come around, am I right?”

“Are you really this…obtuse?”

“Okay, I resent that. I’m not stupid. I’ll admit, there are some times that I can be a little…oblivious and it’s gotten me into trouble, but I know exactly what happened in that coffee shop and you do too. You can’t deny that we had something.”

“Yes, I can. We didn’t have anything in the coffee shop. See? I just denied it.”

“I object your denial,” I said firmly.

“What? You can’t just…ugh!”

“You’re so cute when you get flustered. I could just pick you up and carry you around in my pocket all the time.”

She glared at me and stomped past me to her car.

“So, should I pick you up tonight?”

“No!” She spun around, putting her hands on her hips as she stared me down. “I don’t want to go out tonight. In fact, I don’t want to see you ever again!”

She got into her car and slammed the door. I went over and knocked on her window. “Seven?”

She threw her car in reverse and squealed out of the parking lot. “Hey, this is a twenty mile an hour zone!” I shouted.

I’m a stay at home mom that loves to read. Some of my favorite titles are Pride and Prejudice, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and Horatio Hornblower. I started writing when I was trying to come up with suggestions on ways I could help bring in some extra money. I came up with the idea that I could donate plasma because you could earn an extra $500/month. My husband responded with, “No. Find something else. Write a blog. Write a book.” I didn’t think I had anything to share on blog that a thousand other mothers hadn’t already thought of. I decided to take his challenge seriously and sat down to write my first book, Jack. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed writing. From there, the stories continued to flow and I haven’t been able to stop. I hope my readers enjoy my books as much as I enjoy writing them. It’s cold outside, but it’s getting hot inside…

An unforgiving blizzard

Tom Castle ended up in the wrong apartment on the wrong day. Now a ferocious snowstorm has him trapped with his onetime crush and longtime regret, which is pretty much in line with his lifelong bad luck.

An unwelcome houseguest

Finn Carey has no choice. Although it’s tempting to let Tom take his chances on the streets of Chicago, she doesn’t want anyone to die in a snowbank– not even the man who hurt her so badly years ago.

An unexpected second chance

At first, Tom and Finn do their best to ignore each other in the close quarters. Then the power goes out, and things between them heat up as the secrets start to flow. Which will thaw first: the storm raging outside or the ice protecting their hearts?

Tempting Heat is the first book in Tempt Me, Sara Whitney’s sassy, steamy new contemporary romance series. It’s a standalone novella with no cliffhangers, so slip on your fuzzy socks and get reading!

Excerpt from Tempting Heat

On day three of being snowed in with her old friend-turned-nemesis-turned… whatever Tom was at this point, Finn came to the breakfast table armed with plans.

“So I figure we’ve got two options,” Tom announced after his first sip of coffee.

“You do?” She choked back a laugh that roll-with-the-punches-Tom had beaten her to it.

“Yep,” he said. “One, I still have a mountain of editing, so like we’ve been doing, we can work until it’s time for bed. Or two: We declare today a lazy day and lounge.”

His spoon clinked against his mug as he waited for her response.

“Funny,” she said. “I came up with three options as I was falling asleep last night.” He didn’t need to know she’d written them down and numbered them in order of preference in the Bullet Journal she kept on her nightstand.

“Excellent. Hit me.”

“Well, there’s plan A: we keep plugging away on our projects. Plan B: we fire up Netflix. Or plan C: we spend all day in bed, reading and napping.”

He quirked a brow at her. “In bed? Sounds heavenly.”

The words scorched the air around her. She hadn’t meant to say it like that, but it slipped out and now the image throbbed in her brain. Tom, sprawled across her bed, curly head propped on his hand while the other held a book. Setting it aside when he noticed her eyes drifting shut and then wrapping them both in a blanket. Napping together and waking to find his hand sliding under her clothes, seeking–

Her cheeks heated, and she reached for her coffee to halt her wayward thoughts. That wasn’t part of the plan.

“Different beds and different bedrooms of course,” she clarified, inwardly wincing at her prissy tone.

His hot gaze burned into hers for a beat longer than was strictly necessary before his mask slipped back into place and Friend Tom was seated in front of her once more. But was that relief she felt, or disappointment?

Home for the Holidays by Terry Spear: Book Review

Home for the Holidays by Terry Spear: Book Review

Picture

I love the holiday stories in the Silver Town Wolf series. The festive atmosphere, the way the town comes together to celebrate, and, of course, the romance. I really loved that this one had quite a touch more of the paranormal than just the wolves. We got to see ghosts through the eyes of Meghan MacTire and her sisters. As Meghan tries to help the spirits move on, she worries about telling the love of her life (and potential mate) about her unusual abilities and other secrets from her past.
As she navigates these tricky conversations with Sheriff Peter Jorgenson (who’s hiding his own secrets as well), her past comes back to haunt her – only not in ghostly form. Real-life flesh and blood crazy people show up – one so much more so than the other – and begin the worst of the two has her death all planned out.
But he may have bitten off more than he can chew – because our super evil bad guy has a secret history of his own that’s about to come out. And if the town hadn’t already rallied behind Meghan and her sisters, well, they want their own revenge for past wrongs now.
There was plenty of action in Home for the Holidays, but there were also long periods of inactivity. I feel like the story was just a tad drawn out. While I loved seeing Meghan and Peter become more comfortable around each other, there didn’t see to be a real flow to it. It jumped along in fits and bursts, that if smoothed out could have made the story have a better flow.
I will definitely be reading more of the Silver Town Wolf series. The way you get to re-visit past couples and get to know the whole town is amazing, and I love to go visit.

Murder at the Dude Ranch by Vickie Carroll: Book Review

Murder at the Dude Ranch by Vickie Carroll: Book Review

Picture

I was quite lost at the beginning of the story. While the book is part of the Texas Sized Mystery series, they are marketed as being able to read as stand-alones. I feel like I really needed to have known things from other books here. It jumped right into characters and places, and I had no idea who they were and there was no introduction to them.

Once I figured out who was who, and what was what, they story got a lot better. But I still had some problems with it. For one, our victim seems to be a collossal idiot, and his family really didn’t seem to care about him at all. I sort of understand why his wife wouldn’t, but the rest, while putting on displays of sorrow, it didn’t feel real to me. Perhaps because they weren’t allowed to really become more than part of the background scenery instead of real part of the story.

The whole time, the book points to one person as the murderer and paints them in a very unflattering light. I get putting out a false lead or two, but this seemed to derail the entire investigation, and I’m surprised they managed to figure out who really did it because the police didn’t seem to be really looking into anything. Perhaps it’s because this was a shorter story, and there wasn’t enough time to really dive deep into the mystery, but I really expected a bit more.

Who designed your book covers?
Natasha Snow at http://natashasnow.com/. It was as if she read my mind because that was almost exactly as I pictured Iliana. I like having covers that feature my female characters.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?
Cal Olin is an older Gavin Leatherwood, who played Nicholas Scratch in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. And Iliana is Constance Wu, who is an incredible actor.

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?
I love hearing what you think! Like it, love it, have questions? I want to know so email me at alana@alanadelacroix.com.

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?
Imagination for Cal. I don’t know any resurrected Eagle Knights. Iliana is mostly imagination but her job as a forensic anthropologist was inspired by a woman I worked with about 20 years ago. She was the coolest, so smart and competent.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?
I’m a pantser, which means I go in with minimal plotting, so sometimes it seems as if everything hijacks the story. Although I know the ending (it’s romance, so they always get together!), I only know a few stops on the way. If I plot too much I get bored writing. I wear a bracelet that’s a quote from JRR Tolkein: Not all who wander are lost. Although the line refers to Aragorn’s time in the Wild, I like to use it as a reminder to let the story unravel itself.

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?
Smoky rose.

What did you edit out of this book?
Oh gosh. So much. I have a document called “bits” that contains lines and sections I deleted. It’s 5,000 words. Some of those sections are the journal entries from Iliana’s mother, describing her side of the story. I liked them but took it out because it pulled attention from Cal and Iliana.

However, when Cal sees the unconscious body of a woman near a magical portal, he knows the long period of peace has come to an end. He’s shocked to discover the woman is Dr. Iliana Rogers, Civica’s second-in-command. Seductive Secrets by Elizabeth Rose: Book Review

Seductive Secrets by Elizabeth Rose: Book Review

I really enjoyed the concept behind Seductive Secrets and I wanted to fall in love with it so much, but there was just too much I couldn’t connect with. From the characters themselves, to them falling in love, to the grand solving of the mystery – it was never quite right.

To start with, Lady Willow came off as a brat. She couldn’t keep herself away from the men long enough to have a conversation with her family – and she was totally surprised when she found out people thought she was a loose woman. Her attitude towards Sir Conrad tipped her into the “she doesn’t deserve him” category as she degraded and talked down to him every chance she got until *poof* she was suddenly in love.

Sir Conrad started off really well, but after the incident in the cabin – well – he found himself in “he doesn’t deserve her” territory. So now I have heroes who don’t deserve each other and are at the same time undeserving of each other. They both really needed to grow up – which they just started to do by the end of the story.

The missing ruby was a great twist to the story. I had no idea who took it until Willow and Conrad had their own ah-ha! moment. That was an amazing part of the story (but Willow’s prior sleuthing only made her seem more like a spoiled child). However, this wonderful moment was ruined by their plan to return the stone and make everything right again. No one in their right mind would have believed what they presented as the truth – let alone a castle full of knights and nobility.

Not the book for me, unfortunately.
