Out of the Picture by Tracy Gardner

Join the Shepherd sisters in solving a mystery…before it’s too late!

This artful cozy mystery is perfect for fans of Krista Davis and Joanne Fluke.

Savanna Shepherd is a former art authenticator—someone who can tell a forgery from the real thing. She’s got a talent for spotting secrets hiding in plain sight.

In the wake of a painful breakup, she moves back to her idyllic hometown on the banks of Lake Michigan. At least she’s close to her sisters again, and she’s enjoying her new job as a grade school art teacher.

Savanna even rediscovers her creative soul when an old family friend hires her to paint a mural. But sad and strange incidents occur at the woman’s mansion, compelling Savanna to investigate. With a little help from her sisters—and from Aidan, the intriguing town doctor—will she be able to figure out what’s wrong with this picture?

This intriguing cozy mystery includes a free Hallmark original recipe for Holy Yum Baked Chicken.

My Review of Out of the Picture:

Out of the Picture by Tracy Gardner is the first Hallmark Mystery I’ve read. And it didn’t disappoint. The Shepherd Sisters were a riot and I want to be their forgotten fourth. The only major problem I had was telling them apart. With all the names starting with S, I got them all confused until the very end. Only Savanna, the main sleuth in this case, stood out.

There’s an interesting mix of murder and theft tied together in Out of the Picture. And it really did seem to take the whole community to solve the case, which was a little different to me. While Savannah was the focal point, she really relied on everyone around her to help put the pieces together and catch the bad guys.

The small-town atmosphere and peeks into family gatherings really brought everything together. It rounded the characters out in a way that I don’t always get to see. The side characters weren’t just there for decoration, they were all very unique to themselves and had a reason for being there.

I’m excited to see where this series goes. And it looks like there are a couple of other Hallmark Mysteries that I may need to check out as well!

Three reasons you should read this Rock Star Romance:

  • Racing to Rhapsody by Selena Laurence is a trip back to the Rhapsody crew that I really enjoyed.

She’s Racing…
Shannon Gunn lives life in the fast lane. She drives fast, talks fast, and is one of the fastest-rising managers in the music industry. But Shannon’s also scared–scared to fail, scared she won’t be loved, and scared to need someone.

He’s Waiting…
Dez Takimoto lives life in the Zen lane. He’s wise beyond his years, a kind soul, and a highly-respected member of Rhapsody, the rock band he started with his best friend. But what Dez wishes for most in life is passion–the kind that moves mountains, steals hearts, and runs soul-deep.

Two Hearts Collide.
When Shannon and Dez are thrown together for a whirlwind Rhapsody promo tour, she races into his heart and he discovers that true passion can be as intensely painful as it is beautiful.
She won’t slow down long enough to fall, he wants her last race to be to him…the collision could be catastrophic.

My Review of Racing to Rhapsody:

Racing to Rhapsody by Selena Laurence was a fun look at two very different people who were very right for each other. Both Dez and Shannon were amazing characters. And I couldn’t help but cheer them on the whole way.

Both characters had very different things to overcome. Shannon’s relationship with her father was incredibly toxic. She struggles to walk away from it all and justify her feelings. Success isn’t all there is. And sometimes you do need to slow down.

Dez was a bit of a trip. He was soooo much fun and open-minded that I sometimes wondered how he could possibly like Shannon at all. But it turns he needed a little bit of her drive in his life.

Racing to Rhapsody wasn’t a big rush to the end. While there were plenty of exciting moments, there’s was some much-needed downtime for the characters to connect. it read a lot more real-world romance than many rock star romance I’ve read. And I really appreciate the look at the couple as just two people falling in love.

Talk Derby to Me by RH Tucker

As the editor-in-chief of his high school newspaper, Evan Maldonado is right on track for college next year and pursuing his dream of being a journalist. To put the finishing touch on his college applications, he’s taking an intern position with a well-known newspaper where he’ll receive a letter of recommendation from the editor. There’s just one little problem. The business intern spot he was expecting to get is taken. The only other position they have available is covering the local roller derby league.

Mari Valdez isn’t worried about getting into college. All she’s concerned with is getting through the repulsive world of high school. Sure, she has her best friend, but she still has to put up with teasing because of her multi-colored hair or bruises. The bruises are from roller derby, by the way, the only thing that Mari looks forward to. It’s been her safe haven since her world imploded.

In order to get more information on the derby league, Evan follows Mari to her practices and games. To call their friendship rocky would be an understatement, but the more Evan and Mari are together, the more they seem to connect. When Mari’s personal life boils over, she finds herself confiding in Evan. And just when everything seems to be coming together for the two, a horrible mistake may separate them for good.

Talk Derby to Me is a stand-alone, YA romance novel.

Riding over to the bench, a few of the girls are laughing. Before I can ask them what’s going on, Albie strolls over to us. Trailing behind her is Evan. I forgot about him for a few minutes while I stayed focused on the practice and my teammates.

“Albie,” I hiss at her, getting up to my feet. Yanking off my second roller skate, I hurry over to her before he gets too close. “What is he doing here?”

“Whoa, calm down there, spitfire?” She giggles at her joke. She’s loved that joke for the last two years.

“I will not calm down. Why is Evan here?”

Giving me a stern look, she glances back at Evan. He stays at a distance. When she looks back at me, she orders me closer. She does that sometimes, getting a hard line across her brow, and points for me to step closer with her index finger.

“At some point during this season, he’s doing a profile on you.”

“Excuse me? Why?”

She stares at me like I’m crazy. “Mari, you’re good. Like, really good. You deserve the credit for how great I know you’re going to be this season.”

“I don’t understand.”

“Why do people in school get credit and recommendations based on their sports or other extracurricular activities? Why are awards important? It all looks great on college applications.”

“Who says I’m going to college?”

“How many times do I have to tell you to stop that? You’re going to college. We both are.”

“And how is a profile on me playing derby going to help? They don’t have derby teams in college.”

“No, but it’s something. Mari, stop acting like you’re helpless. You’re not stupid, and I’m going to get something that shows you have extracurricular activities.”

I want to keep arguing, but I know it’ll be fruitless. She’s had it in her head that we’ll be going to the same college since she decided where she was going last year. She’s specifically choosing a university that’s only an hour away, and it’s on the less expensive side for tuition. Albie has way better grades than me, but she’s been determined to help me fill out college applications. I can’t be mad at her for that. She’s stuck by my side and never given up on me, even when I tried pushing her away.

“Fine.” I roll my eyes. Her shoulders shake as she wiggles around with a massive grin on her face. “You!” I yell at Evan and call him over.

“Uh, hey, Mari.”

“So, what do I have to do to be your source?”

“Oh, nothing, really. Just let me watch the practices and games. Let me know what I’m messing up when I’m writing my articles. Stuff like that. Maybe get some inside info on the other teams and players.”

I pinch my lips together, immediately wanting to refuse again. Before I can, Albie widens her eyes at me, urging me to go with it. “Fine.” I let out a sigh. “Meet us tomorrow at lunch.”

An enormous grin spreads across Evan’s lips. “You got it.”

Love's Healing Heart by Claire Colby

Three reasons you should read this Sweet Romance:

  • Love’s Healing Heart by Claire Colby was all about finding your way again and overcoming.
  • Lloyd is a firefighter….need I say more?
  • This was a quick and exciting book that you can read in one afternoon.

About Love’s Healing Heart by Claire Colby

Title: Love’s Healing Heart
Author: Claire Colby
Series: Second Chance at Love #2
Genre: Contemporary Sweet Romance

Love's Healing Heart by Claire Colby

Rose Ronson outran her past all the way to Sweet Grove, Texas. The small town offered warmth and safety, and a friendly fireman right down the street in case of an emergency was an added perk.

Lloyd Martin knew there was something special about his town’s newest resident from his first glance into her guarded green eyes. When Rose asks him to check new alarms she’s installed, he readily agrees to help.
The sheer number of alarms Rose has installed sets off alarms in Lloyd’s head and has him wondering what part of her past she’s running from and if she’ll accept his help when it catches up to her.

Love’s Healing Heart by Claire Colby had a nice dash of suspense added in that made things a bit exciting. Again, the book seemed to move really fast, and I think that’s just how this series goes. The romance seemed to really blossom between Rose and Lloyd. And, as always, I loved seeing the characters from book one again.

Lloyd is your pretty typical hero. Always looking out for everyone and arriving just in time to save the day. While that’s all really great, I wish he had a little more depth.

At times, Rose fell into the same rut as Lloyd. She seemed to be little more than her trauma. Now, I know that can happen to people, and it can take over their lives. But I feel like there was something under the surface that we just weren’t given a chance to see.

The romance is super sweet (and not just that it was a clean romance). When Rose and Lloyd are together, you just want to say, “Awwww….” And there was something I just loved about that.

A flash of approval passed across her features as she nodded and got out of the truck. Her hips swayed as she walked to the cabin.

Damn, he wanted to grip those hips as he pounded into her.

Once he got their overnight bags from the back of the truck, he went inside the cabin. Luna exited one of the bedrooms on the right, and he headed to that one. When he set both their bags on the bed, she said, “You’re not staying in here with me.”

“We have to double up. There are more people than there are rooms.” He crossed the room to her, backing her up against the wall. “Besides, we need quality alone time.”

She snorted. “Quality time?”

He cupped her cheek and ran his thumb over her bottom lip. “You’re my mate. I will do anything to be able to claim you as mine.”

Desire flashed in her green eyes, making them darken slightly. Rafe felt her wolf move just under the surface. Then her body relaxed against him, and she dropped her head, so her forehead pressed against his chest. “I’ll never let another control me like he did.”

His chest tightened, and he wrapped his arms around her, drawing as close as he could. “I’m fully aware you are the Alpha. I have no intention of taking that power or using it against you. Give me the chance to prove it.”

She lifted her head and stared into his gaze. “I assume you want to prove it while staking your claim.”

“I want everyone to know who you belong to just as much as you want the females to know who I belong to.” He lifted his brows, challenging her.

The corners of her lips lifted. “You think you have me all figured out.”

“Not even close.” He leaned down until their mouths were inches apart. “I’m going to enjoy getting to know you all over again. I loved you before, and I’m going to love who you are now even more.”

She started to push him away while shaking her head. When she opened her mouth to speak, he placed a finger over her lips. “Don’t say it. You’re not the only one who has changed. I’ve made so many mistakes. The biggest one was walking away from you. I’m not doing that again.”

They say the first year of marriage was the hardest. If the blade to my new husband’s throat was any indication, they—whoever they were—would be right.

But this wasn’t my husband—not really.

Sure, this was Alistair’s body, and sure, he was probably hidden somewhere, crouched low in the recesses of his own mind, but the man looking through Alistair’s eyes, and wearing Alistair’s skin was not my husband. He was some kind of dark Fae, and he’d taken over.

“What have you done with him? Where is he?” I’d meant it to come out as commanding, but I didn’t quite hit the mark. I was a frantic mess at best, and the monster wearing my husband’s skin knew it.

This was what I got for coming to Faerie. Literally every single person with any lick of sense said demons could get possessed here. They said it was too risky. They said Alistair was in danger by following me to this place.

Did I listen?

Of course not. I smiled, nodded, and did whatever the fuck I wanted to anyway, and look where we were. Look at what happened to the man I loved.

I should have known something was off the moment I saw Alistair fall in the gorge. We’d been trying to keep the Unseelie Fae back. We were trying to stop Verena and whatever cracked plot she was trying to carry out. I’d thought we’d succeeded. Peering into the strikingly blue eyes of Alistair’s hijacked face, I’d say we missed one.

I saw the lie cross his face before he opened his mouth. No. Not today, buddy.

“Think very carefully about what you say next.”I could practically feel my molars cracking from how hard I was clenching my jaw, and if my blade happened to nick his neck, well, it was just a sign that I meant business.

And yeah, this was far too close to home for me. Not just that it was Alistair—not that it was the man I loved being used in such a fashion. No, this was Maria all over again. This was everything I’d buried bubbling up to the surface.

And if Alistair’s face wavered a little due to some unshed tears, well, I’d say I’d earned them.

Not-Alistair took that moment to pounce, bringing the sword from his scabbard up and knocking my blade away from his neck.

I scrambled back a step, before our swords clashed—or rather my athame went from dagger-sized to short-sword sized after I pressed the rune on the handle, and I attacked. My fencing skills were weak at best, but no-rules swordplay? Aidan had once said I was a natural.

Still, this guy was parrying every single strike like he was humoring me rather than fighting for his life.

“I am not your enemy,” Not-Alistair’s mouth said, but his voice was no longer my husband’s. It had a burr of something else I couldn’t place. A smokiness that had never been there before—not even when he’d been phased.

“Really? You got a funny way of showing it.” My frustration bubbled up inside my chest as I slashed and parried. I couldn’t say why I didn’t want to use the power that roiled beneath my skin, but I didn’t.

I could kill him.

I could hurt him.

But I didn’t want to.

Caraval by Stephanie Garber ~ Review

Caraval by Stephanie Garber ~ Review

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Three reasons you should read this Fairy Tale Retelling:

  • Caraval by Stephanie Garber really captured the feeling of wonder. and at many times confusion. of Alice in Wonderland.
  • Garber twisted the truth and hid the lies within lies to make you doubt everything and wonder if you ever really knew the truth to begin with.
  • Scarlet and Donatella make a great duo, and their bond as sisters is very apparent and meaningful.

About Caraval by Cindi Madsen

Title: Caraval

Genre: Young Adult, Fairy Tale Retelling

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

Scarlett Dragna has never left the tiny island where she and her sister, Tella, live with their powerful, and cruel, father. Now Scarlett’s father has arranged a marriage for her, and Scarlett thinks her dreams of seeing Caraval—the faraway, once-a-year performance where the audience participates in the show—are over.

But this year, Scarlett’s long-dreamt-of invitation finally arrives. With the help of a mysterious sailor, Tella whisks Scarlett away to the show. Only, as soon as they arrive, Tella is kidnapped by Caraval’s mastermind organizer, Legend. It turns out that this season’s Caraval revolves around Tella, and whoever finds her first is the winner.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. Nevertheless she becomes enmeshed in a game of love, heartbreak, and magic.

My Review of Caraval:

Caraval by Stephanie Garber was quite an interesting trip down the rabbit hole. Scarlet and Donatella are sisters that are incredibly different – as many sisters are. Scarlet is looking for a way to safely escape their horrible father, but Donatella is looking for adventure.

And adventure is what they find – but it’s not the adventure either of them really thought it would be. Separated before they can enter Caraval – the story follows Scarlet as she searches for her sister through the crazy twists and turns of the game. And if she wins – she will be rewarded with one wish.

I loved the atmosphere of Caraval. It was a very well-balanced mix of the dark and dangerous with the bright and spectacular. You never know who is really a player or a performer, who is telling the truth and who is lying, and which way the clues will lead you next.

The ending was quite a surprise. While I had figured some of the mysteries out, there were still several that I to find out right along with Scarlet – which is always nice. There’s just enough left unknown at the end that you will NEED to get book two started, so you might want to have that on hand.

I loved the little nods to Alice in Wonderland along the journey. Just enough to notice, but not so much that Caraval didn’t remain it’s own unique story and place.

  • Love’s Healing Home by Claire Colby is a sweet small-town romance where you really get to know the characters.

Love's Healing Home by Claire Colby

After Lily’s fiance breaks off their engagement, she pulls up her roots and planted herself in Texas to make a new home closer to her sisters. She focuses all of her attention on her new life, which includes renovating her Grandmother’s old house–and ignoring the way her handsome neighbor’s smile causes her heart to skip a beat.

Matt is Sweet Grove’s most eligible bachelor, but his new neighbor from up north has him rethinking what–and who–he wants in his Happily Ever After. He has no idea that Lily thinks it’s the wrong time to meet Mr. Right. Can the love he feels for his lovely new neighbor change her mind and win her heart?

My Review of Love’s Healing Home:

Love’s Healing Home by Claire Colby was a really cute story that introduced me to the “Flower Sisters” as they come to be called around town. The star of the first book is Rose, a teacher that has moved to Texas. The reasons for her move are a little vague. She wants to get away from her ex-fiance who broke her heart, and one of her sisters needed to relocate because of “something bad.”

Matt is the hunky neighbor who just happens to work at the school where Lily will be teaching in the fall. He was a fun character. An all-around good guy, but sometimes he seemed a little one-dimensional. There wasn’t all that much to him.

Lily was a little more complex, and their relationship comes on really fast. As a novella, I didn’t get a lot of the slow burn and build up that I like to see. There wasn’t a lot standing in their way, so at times I struggled to find the conflict.

The copy I read had quite a few errors that tended to take me out of the story. I still enjoyed overall, but I think it could have used a little more polishing.

Rhodes

The therapy office parking lot looks more like a scene from a creepy video game—fog hangs in the trees, cutting off our line of vision to the busy I-85 below. It’s otherworldly, almost as if we could walk in any direction and plummet off the side of a cliff into the great wide nothing below.

Mom’s chemical-peeled skin is still red and swollen; she grimaces down the barrel of the green straw that sticks out from the clear cup in her hand. Wind rattles the thinning dogwood branches that ring the parking lot, and I pull my jacket tighter.

“So, Dusk told me you’re thinking about the Capstone Award after all,” she says, eyeing her reflection in the driver’s-side window. With a flick of a polished thumbnail, the car beeps twice and the doors all unlock at once. I start to cross over to the passenger side, but Mom hands me the keys. “You need the practice.”

I sigh and slide into the driver’s side instead.

Translation: I’m exhausted from my morning with the esthetician, and I’d like to sleep off the Bloody Mary that’s still in my system before we get back to your dad.

“I’m not doing the Capstone,” I say.

My position has only galvanized between Dusk’s office and Mom’s car: I would be selling my soul to the devil. I’m not ready to count it as my only option just yet.

“We all agreed that the Capstone Award was a part of your outcome goals.” Mom shoves a pair of oversize designer shades onto the bridge of her nose and then cringes. She fans her face with an old church bulletin off the floorboard. “I’ve got the document on my phone—”

“You can’t just stick your kid in therapy because she’s not doing what you want her to do.” I jam the keys into the ignition and start the engine. “That’s literally not even how therapy works.”

Merely surviving versus fully thriving . . . But only when it’s convenient to the adults in the room.

Mom reclines her seat as far back as it can go and fastens her seat belt.

I throw the car into drive and descend the hill through the fog, stopping to merge onto the frontage road. The traffic doesn’t relent—the fog is thick, and one car after the next flies up with their brights screaming through my rear window.

I have no option: I have to go forward. There’s no escaping, no turning right and finding a back road onto the interstate.

I’m stuck here, with no fewer than twenty cars behind me, and now they’re all starting to blare their horns, waiting for me to merge. Stuck. Always effing stuck.

“Mom—”

“I’m just saying, you did wonderfully in the Ocoee Youth Arts Awards last year. It’s so good for your résumé, and this is your year for the Capstone Award—”

“No.” I breathe through the tightness in my chest. I’m going to pull out in front of one of these wild Atlanta drivers, and then we’re both going to die. “I need you to tell me what to do—”

“Just send something they haven’t seen yet. Surely you have something—” She pulls her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose to peer up at me. “Send them drawing homework. They love you.”

All of the cars are honking now. All of them.

Thirty cars blaring their horns. To my left, the interstate is hemorrhaging midsize sedans. “No, I mean, I need help pulling onto the road—”

“Ugh, Rhodes honey, just wait for a break and then gun it.”
“There are no breaks—”
“Sure there are. Just go.”
Around me, cars all cut each other off. They jump in front of each other, and honk at each other, and fly around each other with middle fingers waving out their driver’s-side windows.

With a deep breath, I throw us into traffic.

Behind me, a car swerves into the shoulder. The car behind them slams on their brakes, and I hear a telltale metallic crunch three cars back—nothing life-altering, by the sound of it. A second later, the drivers are out of their cars and arguing.

They’re fine by the looks of it, thank God.

“Go!” Mom says.

I rocket off toward the Alabama state line. I won’t stop shaking until long after I step out of the car.
“Just think about it,” Mom says, oblivious. “Win the Capstone, and the world is your oyster.”
