Dating Mr.Darcy by Kate O'Keeffe

Is it a truth universally acknowledged, that a girl must compete on reality TV to win a modern-day Mr. Darcy’s heart?

Clothing designer Emma Brady is having serious doubts about how far she’ll go to promote her new activewear line. Sure, being on a reality show would be great for business, but is putting up with Mr. Darcy-wannabe Sebastian Huntington-Ross really worth it?

Sebastian is straight out of an Austen novel. But it’s hard to focus on his chiseled jaw, broad shoulders and wickedly sexy accent when all Emma can see is his pride, arrogance, and smug demeanor.

But Sebastian has a secret reason for being on the show, and when Emma figures out what it is, her heart warms to him—without her permission.

“Emma,” Johnathan says, snapping my attention away from Kennedy. “We would love to hear your performance. Please, take to the stage.”

I wave my hand in the air. “Oh, I’m going to sit this one out, if it’s all the same to you. But thanks for asking.”

His eyes shift to a crew member and back to me. “All the contestants need to perform, I’m afraid.”

“As much as I may want to perform—and believe me I do so, so much—I’m afraid I’m no singer. I told Sebastian that already and he seemed cool with it. Believe me, I’m doing all of you a big favor here.”

“She doesn’t want to have to follow my performance. Do you, Emma?” Hayley says with the fakest sweet smile ever.

“I can well understand that,” Johnathan replies, “but the rules are the rules. Aren’t they, Mrs. Watson?” He’s looking for back-up now.

Mrs. Watson rises to her feet and glares at me. “You. Stage. Now.” Gone is the firm but polite language. It seems she’s going for straightforward orders now.

I chew on my lip as I look around the room. “Do I have to?” I ask, and yes, I know I sound like a whiny kid being made to eat her broccoli.

“You do,” Mrs. Watson replies.

I let out a defeated sigh. “Okay.” I make my way over to the stage like I’m walking the line. I don’t want to perform, and I haven’t practiced anything either.

I scramble around in my brain, searching desperately for a song in my range. Which is basically about four notes, all of them flat, if my car singing skills are anything to go by.

“Miss Emma? We’re waiting,” Mrs. Watson says tersely.

All eyes are on me. Johnathan is watching me warily, Sebastian is looking somewhere between concerned and amused, and there’s no way I’m going to look in Hayley’s or Camille’s direction right now.

I’ve got to think of something, stat!

When I don’t do anything, Mrs. Watson barks, “Sing!”

Out of pure shock, I open my mouth and begin to sing the first song that comes to mind. It was playing in the car as I was driven here what feels like a lifetime ago, even though I think it was only a matter of days. Days? Really?

Lil Nas X’s voice is in my head, and I sing along with it. I’m taking my horse down to an old road, and it takes all my willpower not to bob on the spot as though I’m on that horse myself. When I get to the Billy Ray Cyrus part, I notice a few of the contestants go from controlling their mirth to openly sniggering. It puts me off my game. Not that I had much of a game in the first place.

I fudge some of the words and replace others with the word “horse,” which seems appropriate, given that it’s a song about riding one. Or is it a metaphor? All I know is this is about a gazillion miles from being my finest hour, and I wish more than anything it was over.

When I finally get to the end of the song, I stop abruptly, clamp my mouth shut, and wait for the inevitable laughter to roll around the room. I’m not disappointed. Camille is doubled over, shaking with laughter, Hayley has tears rolling down her cheeks, and even Phoebe and Kennedy are snickering, although I can tell they’re working hard to hold it in.

I glance at Sebastian. His face is alight with amusement, but his eyes are surprisingly soft. “Nice work,” he mouths, and I shoot him my most withering look, which is a little hard to muster when you’re up to your neck in a lake of humiliation, your cheeks hot enough to scramble eggs.

Her Bad Idea by Sagan Morrow

Three reasons you should read this Contemporary Romance:

  • Her Bad Idea by Sagan Morrow was an eye-opening story for me with an incredibly strong and outspoken female lead – and she was great.
  • I really really wish I could have actually seen Scarlett and Pete dance in real life – their chemistry is off the charts, and I know they would be amazing.
  • I learned a lot through Scarlett’s friends about the polyamorous lifestyle that was super interesting.

About Her Bad Idea by Sagan Morrow

Title: Her Bad Idea
Author: Sagan Morrow
Series: Polyamorous Passions #7
Genre: Contemporary Romance

Her Bad Idea by Sagan Morrow

Focus on the dance competition. The business opportunity. The prize money, for goodness sake. Anything except…

That smarmy attitude.

Those mocking eyes.

That chiseled jawline.

Staying focused on the task at hand might be harder than Scarlett Mitchell thought, when she’s stuck with sexy, arrogant Pete Fraser as her dance partner for the next six weeks. But she has no choice—he’s her only hope to win the big dance competition. Scarlett needs to win that prize money if she wants to save her burlesque business from bankruptcy.

…And it’s all the more complicated when she unexpectedly finds herself in a fake relationship with Pete, as an attempt to make her unrequited crush, Westley Prince, jealous…

Her Bad Idea is a forced proximity, slow burn enemies to lovers romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is Book 7 in the Polyamorous Passions series. There’s a thin line between love and hate in this dance competition romance!

My Review of Her Bad Idea:

Her Bad Idea by Sagan Morrow is the super flirty and very powerful story of Scarlett. She is determined to make her business succeed on her own. But things are going well, and she is so set on doing it herself, she doesn’t tell anyone or ask anyone for help.

When she’s set up with Pete for the dance competition, she’s pretty disappointed. She really really doesn’t like him and they rub each other the wrong way every time they meet. Unless they let loose and just dance.

When they dance, there are sparks, and the sparks are hard to ignore. Their fake relationship to build up hype for the dance competition, pushes them together outside the dance studio. And, eventually, they start to get to know each other. Then everything changes.

I think one of my favorite scenes in Her Bad Idea is Scarlett and her friends sitting down and having a really honest conversation. A conversation about business, love, life, and what Scarlett really wants from all of it. It was a powerful look into their friendship and a turning point for Scarlett.

Don’t let this downplay the serious hotness that is Scarlett and Pete. You could feel the underlying tension every time they were on the page together – and sometimes when they weren’t together. Definitely a super hot slow burn that is well worth the wait.

Pamela Gibson

She found her room and closed her door, breathing hard. Her hand still tingled from the physical contact, and her body trembled with delicious aches she refused to name. She was exhausted, and the wine had dissolved her usual barriers. If Andrew had tugged a little harder, she would have dropped into his lap and made a proper fool of herself.

Her room, right across the hall from Andrew’s, enveloped her in warmth as she disrobed and found her nightwear in the valise Aunt Lily had sent. Someone had freshened the water in the ewer and placed a drying towel next to it. A lighted candle was placed on a table close to the bed. Andrew knew she loved to read and probably had it put there in case she couldn’t sleep.

That would not be the case tonight.

She felt like the ghost of Hamlet’s father, walking the parapets with unseeing eyes. Her movements were methodical, but if she looked in a mirror, she’d see blank eyes glazed over from a full stomach, wine, and fatigue.

Mrs. Townsend was to wake her at midnight. Thank God. She probably would not be able to wake herself.

She dropped into bed and pulled up the coverlet, leaving the candle lit. She closed her eyes, lying rigidly in the center of her bed. Sleep would not come. Her thoughts were not on the child, but on Andrew. God help her, she burned for him. When he’d held her arm in the library, then let his hand drift to her palm, stroking the tender skin gently with his thumb, she’d nearly melted into a puddle of treacle.

She wanted his hands and mouth on her. She wanted to run her hands down his muscular arms, reach around his back, and pull his body against hers to ease the pulsing between her thighs. She wanted to know what it felt like to lay skin against skin instead of always with a layer of clothing between them.

She didn’t want to die never having experienced physical intimacy with a man. Andrew wanted her, she was sure. But if she walked across the hall and entered his room, she’d be no better than Caroline Woodley.

Scrunching into a ball, she tightened every muscle, wishing this longing would go away. She could never marry anyone else, not even for children. Every time she closed her eyes in the marriage bed, she would pretend it was him.

You have to stop this nonsense right away, or you will be too weary to be useful when it’s time for you to tend the child.

He was inside his room now. She’d heard his footfalls not five minutes past.

She’d resigned herself to spinsterhood. She had Aunt Lily as a companion, a house full of books with a pianoforte and a sewing room to indulge her creativity. What more could she possibly want?

A door closed, and someone walked down the hall. Lester—she recognized his heavy tread. Andrew was alone.

She uncurled and tried to relax. Her breath caught in her throat. What was she? Some kind of wanton? Did she really want to “let go” as Aunt Lily put it?

You’ve been raised as a lady. You know what you want to do would seal your fate. There would be no marriage ever in your future, not even to a widower because you would be used, soiled, no better than a barque of frailty.

“Damn.”

She rose from her bed, leaving the lighted candle, and jerked open the door.

The Capital that was once a glorious sight to behold was no more. It laid in destruction and agony. The cries of children filled the restless skies as deformed creatures began to defile the lands. Tormented souls that were meant to remain banished wandered out in the open.

The demons cut through all; old, young, strong, or weak. Nothing halted them from executing their God’s justice as they began to initiate their plans of erasing mankind and starting the world anew.

Griffyn was running far away from the Capital. By some miracle, he had escaped with the sword that the Red Hand entrusted him with, the sword that harbored the only thing that could pose a threat to the Gods that descended: the Masamune.

Tears were running down on his cheeks as he flew past the terrified citizens. Those who stood their grounds and tried to fight for their right to live were being left for slaughter. Yet Griffyn did not wait, he did not fight back.

“Forgive me, forgive me,” he repeated in agony as he rushed outside the keep and made his way through the courtyard. The demons that tore the place down seemed to ignore him as they had their jaws full of flesh. Griffyn ran and did not look back, the horrors trapped in his mind.

Within minutes, he was outside the once proud city that boosted its invulnerability. He paused as archers readied their arrows at him. Just outside, some of the remaining forces of the late King had rallied up and built a few barricades to keep the monsters at bay.

“Stop!” he shouted. “What are you all doing?”

“Hold your fire!” a voice commanded as he emerged into the light of the struggling sun. Squirmy eyebrows sat on a square face beneath a head of shiny golden hair. His eyes were a piercing light blue as he met Griffyn’s gaze.

“Wilson?” Griffyn mumbled.

“What in God’s name happened inside? What did you all do?” Wilson asked as he grabbed him by the shirt and pushed him around.

“Careful who you plead to. Gods are all out of mercy.”

The Game Changer by Jennifer Brown

Three reasons you should read this Cozy Mystery:

  • The Game Changer by Jennifer Brown is a fun mix of sports and sleuthing with just a dash of baking – it sounds like an odd combo, but it worked!
  • Hollie Bisbee may be a former big-city reporter, but she seems to fit well in her new small-town role.
  • The book introduces a sidekick AND a potential love interest, and they are amazing characters.

The Game Changer by Jennifer Brown

Hollie Bisbee used to be a big-city crime reporter. Now, she’s a small-town journalist, and she’s bored. She and a young mom, talented baker Daisy Mueller, start the Knock ‘Em Dead podcast…”Where murder and muffins meet!” It’s all fun, games, and baking tips until real murder comes to Parkwood. The coach of a rival football team turns up dead―the victim of a hit-and-run in the Parkwood High parking lot after a brutal Homecoming game loss. The entire town is on edge, and the police chief, whose son is the star quarterback, just may look the guiltiest of all.

With Hollie’s investigative skills and Daisy’s famous muffins…and in spite of the charming rookie police officer tasked with keeping Hollie out of the way… the podcasting duo sets out to solve their first real case.

This new cozy mystery, the first in a series, includes a killer free recipe for Cherry-Choco-Chunk Muffins.

My Review of The Game Changer:

The Game Changer by Jennifer Brown was a touchdown first in series book. Hollie is struggling with her new journalism assignments. Used to the fast pace of the big city and huge stories, she’s now in a small town covering the new hot dog roller at the football game. Her struggle is soooo real. But at the same time, you can feel her love for the town and its people. She’s really found a new home.

But that new hot dog roller might be her big-ticket. When the rival team’s coach is run over in the parking lot – Hollie is the first on the scene. But it seems like the local police won’t be doing anything about it. Hollie is furious and is determined to figure it out herself.

Well, not entirely by herself. Enter the sidekick – a baking wonder whose only crime-solving skills come from watching TV. And I love her for it. Daisy’s family keeps things even more interesting, as they seem to be a huge tornado of chaos all the time.

Somehow these two manage to pick up on clues and start ruling out and coming up with new suspects. The police chief is not pleased and sends his new deputy out to keep an eye on them. The super cute and really nice deputy. The three form an unlikely team that mostly works together but sometimes get in each other’s way – just like life.

The Game Changer has all the highlights of a great cozy mystery. Humor, a possible love interest, great friendships, and great characters.

Three reasons you should read this Cozy Mystery:

  • Behind the Frame by Tracy Gardner is a great follow-up to Out of the Picture featuring the same great characters and town.
  • While still very art-focused, there are always opportunities for Savannah’s friends and family to shine in their own way.
  • Savannah and Dr. Aiden are still a bit of a pair, and I wonder if they’ll ever make it an official relationship.

Behind the Frame by Tracy Gardner

Savanna Shepherd, an art expert turned elementary art teacher, is planning the Art in the Park festival for her hometown of Carson. But apparently, someone isn’t happy that Carson got to host the event: the beloved statue in the park is destroyed. Not long after, Savanna finds the dead body of one of the people on the planning committee.Savanna and her sisters are convinced that the arrested murder suspect didn’t do it, despite strong evidence to the contrary. With the help of Dr. Aidan Gallagher, Savanna’s new romantic interest, they uncover hidden resentments and intrigue. Several people in Carson had a motive for the murder. Can they find out which one of them is behind the framing of an innocent person?

My Review of Behind the Frame:

Behind the Frame by Tracy Gardner finds Savannah deep in another murder investigation. It all starts with a beheaded statue in the park and ends up with a dead councilman in his house. And of course, this all happens as the town is preparing for the Art in the Park festival.

Savannah is certain the event will pull out, and she dives right in trying to figure out what is going on. Her investigation takes on a life of its own as she follows leads and uncovers a little more than she bargained for.

With plenty of quirky characters and high-speed antics, Behind the Frame kept me turning the pages and wondering what Savannah and her sisters (I still can’t keep them straight in my head though) would get up to next. I almost wish the sisters would have a book that really focused on them so I could finally keep their names straight. I just can’t seem to do it even though I really want to!

The ending was a bit of a surprise, and not where the case had led us at the beginning. Savannah was as fun as ever, and watching her relationship with the townsfolk grow was a lot of fun. I see her settling in for the long haul here and having plenty of adventures down the line.

Warping Minds & Other Misdemeanors by Annette Marie & Rob Jacobsen

My name is Kit Morris, and welcome to my warped life.

Picture the scene: Me, an average guy with psychic powers—not that my abilities are in any way average—just trying to scrape by in a harsh world. So maybe I’ve conned a few people, but did I really deserve to be thrown in MPD jail alongside magic-wielding serial killers?

According to Agent Lienna Shen, one-hundred-percent yes.

But her hardass attitude and “Arcana prodigy” status aren’t enough to bring down my former best friend, who slipped through the MPD’s fingers and is days away from unleashing untold horrors upon the city. Or he’s going to steal something. I don’t really know.

Whatever he’s up to, that’s why I’m sitting in an interrogation room with Lienna. And that’s why I just offered myself as her temporary new partner for the purposes of thwarting my ex-accomplice.

And that’s how I’m going to escape. I might even help with the case before I cut and run.

The phone beeped again. Captain Blythe sighed, reached under the table, and lifted a cell phone into view. The screen lit up as she checked her messages. Her mouth tightened, which I took to mean doom and disaster were impending and we should take shelter immediately.

Standing, she clipped the phone back to her belt and turned to Lienna. “I need to take care of something. Keep him talking, Agent Shen.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

With a sharp nod, Blythe strode out of the room and graciously slammed the door behind her.

“A little intense, isn’t she?” I observed.

Lienna took the vacated seat. “She’s a precinct captain in one of the biggest cities in the country.”

Hmm. Despite her neutral tone, her voice had a soft, caressing quality that I found surprisingly pleasant. It was a shame she wasn’t playing good cop.

“Every day, Captain Blythe deals with rampant magic, illicit guilds, arrogant guild masters who think they’re above the law, and violent criminals who use their abilities to hurt, cheat, or kill people.”

She didn’t add, “Violent criminals just like you.” Her restraint impressed me.

“And,” she continued, “all while keeping the existence of magic, guilds, and the MPD hidden from the public. A crucial mandate your guild flouted.” She cleared her throat. “But you were just an intern, weren’t you, Kit? You were doing what you were told. You don’t need to protect them.”

I grinned. “That works better without the throat-clear first. Really obvious tell that you’re about to bullshit me, I’ve gotta say.”

She stiffened in her seat.

“Oh, and try to relax more. The fake sympathy will be more convincing.”

Her glower returned full force, obliterating the remnants of her kind expression. It’d been a decent attempt at building a rapport with me. She wasn’t experienced at the technique, which seemed like an oversight in her training, but I suspected Lienna’s real role in the agency involved far more skill than mere interrogation.

According to the rumors floating through the holding cells—of which I believed maybe five percent— Agent Lienna Shen was an abjuration sorcerer, and abjuration was … anti-magic sorcery?

That concluded my knowledge on the topic. But I did know the handcuffs around my wrists were an artifact created by a sorcerer for a specific magical purpose: in this case, nullifying the magic of whoever had the unfortunate pleasure of wearing them.

When she didn’t respond to my helpful critique, I attempted a charming smile. “You’re pretty young for an agent.”

Lienna’s scowl deepened, even though it was a reasonable observation; she looked my age, which seemed like a stretch for full agenthood.

“Do you know why you’re here?” she asked coldly. “In this room?”

“Because Blythe has a thing for younger guys who can quote the entire courtroom speech from A Few

Good Men?”

“Because,” she said in that clipped tone people use when they’re silently praying for patience—or imagining what it’d feel like to strangle me, “we’re currently investigating three cases of extortion totaling two million dollars, five cases of embezzlement over five hundred thousand dollars each, and eight reports of blackmail. Your guild was behind them all, and unless you want those charges added to your already extensive list of crimes, you should strongly consider shedding some light on the inner workings of KCQ.”

Despite myself, my mood sobered. This wasn’t my first interrogation, but it was my first time in the custody of the international organization responsible for dispatching magic-wielding criminals. I had no idea what to expect as far as charges and sentencing.

“Let’s go back to the beginning,” she suggested. “Your name.” “Kit Morris.”

“How old are you?”

“Twenty-two.”

“What’s your magic class?”

“Psychica.” Which she already knew. KCQ had been a guild populated entirely by voodoo-brain psychics with wildly varying abilities—all the wilder once I’d joined the team.

“Want some company?”

Makiah cracked a single lid to peek at Kyra. “Always… though there’s a chance this pool is spelled.”

Kyra’s brow ticked up as she kicked off her flip-flops and slid out of her jeans. She gingerly dipped her toes in testing the temperature. Pulling her shirt over her head she stepped in the pool and sank into the water across from Makiah. “Raven’s got witches in her pocket. What kind of spell do you think they did?”

Makiah shrugged, “I can’t find the energy to wonder or even care, I’m just content.”

Kyra laughed, “You look it.”

“Give it a couple minutes and you’ll be just as high as I am. Where’s Rune?”

“Couldn’t find him.”

“I’m sure he’ll show up… he always shows up.”

Kyra studied him. “Does that bother you?”

“Doesn’t really matter now. Does it?”

“Of course, it does, how you feel will always matter to me.”

Makiah shook his head. “Give it a minute. Nothing will matter then.”

“Kiah, stop.” She moved to sit beside him. “You’re letting whatever they did to this pool affect you too much.”

Makiah gave her a sidelong glance. “Pretty sure this spell is meant to lower inhibitions. Allow us to be ourselves… maybe this is just me.”

Kyra sighed. “It’s not.”

Scoffing, he retorted, “You really think you know me?”

She leaned back in the water and smiled. “I know I do.”

“Either you really don’t, or you just don’t care.”

His words coursed through her, tiny pinpricks that warned her something wasn’t right. “What? Why would you even say that to me?”

“You saw our future… saw it working out someday. Right?”

She stared at him, something screamed at her to be careful, that the words he spoke next could truly break her heart, and she had a sneaking suspicion there was more to it than the spelled mineral pool.

Gingerly she answered, “Yes.”

Makiah arched a brow at her. “And yet, here we sit, both seeing other Fae… either your vision was always wrong, or you gave up on it… on me.”

LIAM

Opening the file, I look at Pete’s report. While a sister is mentioned, there are no photographs, nor is there an age or date of birth. At the time, this missing information didn’t bother me. Now, it sends anger slithering through my veins. The answer to the problem of Kate’s coming death should have been contained in this file, not left to a chance encounter. The oversight is going to cost Pete, but for now, I smile. The sister isn’t just Kate’s younger or elder sibling. No, she is her twin. Her identical twin.

I flip through the photos I have taken, cropping and enlarging the woman’s face on the screen. There is no telling them apart. For the first time since getting Kate’s cancer diagnosis, my body relaxes.

The waitress sets my gin and tonic on the table and I dial Pete’s number.

“I’ve sent you a number of photos. You need to start explaining why you failed to tell me that Kate has an identical twin sister.”

Pete owes me, and I am collecting my debt – plus interest.

No one feeds me incorrect information without paying the price, and Pete is about to discover that price. With Charles leaving to go live in some godforsaken remote place in Scotland, there is no one to stop me.

The phone echoes with the urgent fumbling of a man not prepared to accept his fate. My lips grow thinner.

“Well, I haven’t got all day. Frankly, I’ve waited long enough. How many years is it since you compiled the information on Kate for me?” I don’t wait for Pete to answer. “I’ll tell you, Pete. Six years. Six years, and in that time, you never bothered to check that the information I paid for was complete. You know I’m not a tolerant man, Pete. Tolerance is for fools, and I will not be treated like a fool.”

“You didn’t specify how far back to go, so I only did a preliminary scan of the time before Kate was taken in by her aunt. I did inform you about the sister. The aunt sold her to a couple who couldn’t have children. You weren’t interested in the sister at the time.”

I put down my glass with a thud. The occupants of a table near me look over but are soon engrossed in their conversation once again.

“Don’t you ever try and weasel your way into thinking that this is my fault. It’s not going to go away that easily. The issue here isn’t whether I was interested in the sister at the time or not, it’s that you should have done your job properly. You didn’t, you were sloppy, and now you owe me.”

“Mr. Thornton…” Pete stutters, and I can sense him gathering his excuses.

“I wouldn’t go down that road if I were you, Pete. People like you are ten a penny. You have no living relatives, no wife or children. It’s fair to say no one will miss you.”

“Are you threatening me?” Pete sounds stunned.

The poor man really is stupid, despite being an excellent private detective. If he thinks his sloppy work won’t have any consequences attached to it, he’s a silly, silly, silly man.

“No, Pete, I’m not threatening you. I am telling you that you have twenty-four hours to finish getting all the information on Kate and her sister. And, to clarify – when I say all the information, I mean down to blood type and pimples, or you can kiss your existence goodbye. I hope I have made myself understood.”

“Yes.” Pete bites out the word like someone is holding a gun to his head and threatening to pull the trigger.

The image makes me smile.

“Good. I shall see you tomorrow at ten a.m. sharp, at my office.”

“But that’s only sixteen hours away.” At least Pete can do the maths.

“Then you’d better get going, before I move our meeting forward.” I hang up, leaving Pete spluttering into his phone.

Picking up my drink, I start working out my options.

First things first. I have to get the real Kate out of the way and into her final resting place. I will have to curb my impatience and ride out the forty-eight hours left.

The sun no longer feels unwelcome. Like my brightening mood, I find its radiance has a warming effect.
