Mistletoe Wishes by JJ Carlson

The last thing Keaton wants is to be stuck in the small town his father owns for the holidays. The only thing he detests more than Christmas is small towns that make a big deal over the holiday. Especially a holiday Keaton associates with his mother’s death. Keaton plans to get rid of his father’s investment as quickly as possible, but what he doesn’t expect is to get tangled in tinsel with the beautiful Harper—a feisty little baker who is determined to push his limits.

Harper wants nothing more than to make her bakery, Mistletoe Wishes, a successful franchise. She’s worked hard to get to where she is today and isn’t about to let anything—or anyone—stand in her way. With relationships and romance being at the bottom of her list, Harper finds herself in unfamiliar territory when she meets the sexy Keaton Snow. His aversion and distaste for Christmas and her home town are the only things she doesn’t find attractive about him.

Will Keaton open his heart up to Harper and let the joy of the season, and a promise of a future, deter his plans to sell the town he grew up resenting?

My eyes move down to her pouty pink lips, where it lingers for a bit longer than it should. I’m glad when a knock on the door breaks the spell this woman has me under. I don’t know what it is about her, but there is something.

“Just in time,” she says happily, handing me her decoration. She opens the door, and a staff member pushes in a tray. She thanks the woman at the door, and wheels the tray inside, before shutting the door behind her.

“What is all this?” I ask in wonderment.

“Cookies, because we didn’t have any this morning, eggnog and some warm apple cider—extra kick. I wasn’t sure which you would prefer.”

“Both.” I grin and swipe a cookie off the tray. I groan in delight as it melts in my mouth. “Now, this here is a mouth-watering cookie,” I say looking her up and down in the process. And the cookies were mouth-watering, but so was Harper. I notice the scarlet flush creeping across her cheeks.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, Harper.” I tease.

“What?” She giggles, and I swear it’s my new favorite sound. She lifts her mug of eggnog, so I do the same. I clink my glass to hers, taking a sip of the best eggnog I have ever tasted.

After I’ve eaten too many cookies, she gives me the rundown of how and where to place the decorations after I string up the lights. She warns me that she is the creative genius behind this process, and any urge to change things will not be tolerated. I have never laughed so hard in my life. When we’re intoxicated from the cider, I wrap some tinsel around her neck and playfully pull her closer. There’s a flash of alarm, followed by a twinkle of lust in her eyes, and I feel my throat constrict. I should kiss her, and finally taste those luscious lips of hers that I’ve craved since that first night stranded in the snow.

“I’m dizzy.” She giggles, suddenly pulling away from me. Her absence leaves me longing with an impulse to pull her close to me again. To smell the vanilla scent of her hair.

We sit at the foot of my bed and stare up at what I concede to be the most beautiful tree I have ever laid eyes on. I may be sitting on the floor of a lodge in an ugly sweater, but I have never had this much fun. I glance her way and decide that Harper Clifford is the most beautiful woman I have ever laid eyes upon. Ever.

“This is the best part,” she says, her eyes twinkling when she looks at the lights. “Sitting down after a job well done and being able to appreciate your creation and handiwork.”

“We make a pretty good team.” I lean slightly and nudge her shoulder.

“That we do.” She looks up at me with a smile so bright it makes me feel warm inside. I can’t remember the last time I felt this way, not with my family, nor with Ana. Being here in this small town in the middle of nowhere with a woman who is as gorgeous as she is smart, I realize I have never truly felt at peace until this moment. I also know that I have to be honest with her about everything.

“What would you do if you weren’t a hotshot businessman?” she asks casually.

I look away from her, then back. “I’d write books.”

“Yeah?” She turns a little toward me. “What kind of books?”

“Tragic love stories.” I smile at her. Maybe, I’d write stories about women like her and men like me who meet at the wrong time in their lives.

“Why not the smutty kind?” She bites down on the corner of her lip. Holy fuck! Maybe I’d write about what I’d like to do to that pretty little mouth. I have to look away.

“Harper, I should tell you—” She looks up at me, and for a second, I believe in miracles. She closes the distance, her lips brushing against mine. There is an undercurrent of pure unbridled desire, but it’s mixed with something else. She lowers onto her knees beside me, her eyes holding mine hostage. Small hands cradle my face, and the sweet scent of her is intoxicating. I want to lean in closer, watch her unravel beneath me, explore every curve of her body in front of the fireplace. She is perfect, everything I want but I don’t deserve. Her eyes flutter closed. The urge to kiss her is so strong. I pull her closer to me, but instead of kissing her, I hold her to my chest. I can feel her breathing quicken, as she tenses in my arms.

“I’m sorry,” she says, pulling away from me. She stands, and I lean my hands on my knees, watching her walk away. I should go after her and explain, but I find myself looking up at the tree, getting lost in all the reasons I shouldn’t. Maybe I’m a coward. Perhaps I’m a fool. One thing I am not is the man who deserves a woman like Harper.

You Had Me at Hockey by Kelly Jamieson

Can a spirited, down-to-earth influencer get an uptight hockey player out of his shell?

Josh
I am a warrior. That’s been my motto since I recovered from a near-death accident when I was younger. Now I enjoy my nice, settled life in Dallas playing pro hockey—a boring life is better than being dead. I’m not a party guy or an adventurer; I like my routine and peace and quiet. So being traded to New York is the worst possible change that could happen. And meeting unfiltered and fascinating Sara Carrington throws my life into even more chaos.

Sara
I’ve been considered weird my whole life, which is why I’m still a virgin, but I’ve turned it into a career with my YouTube videos. Who knew people would love watching me talk about my zits, taste-test meatless burgers, and try to learn TikTok dances! Now I’m launching a podcast. Getting hockey star Josh Heller as a guest will help gain listeners for sure. I expect a bearded jock with no teeth and nothing to say, but I get a hot as H-E-double-hockey-sticks grouch with a surprisingly dirty mind. My mission to make him laugh is successful, but I want to know why he’s so uptight underneath that panty-dropping smile. Maybe I can teach Josh to have some fun . . . and maybe he can teach me a thing or two along the way. . . .

I ask the driver to wait while I go inside to get her. I texted her to let her know I’m here and she said she’s on her way down. I enter the red brick building through brass doors beneath a small canopy and wait in the lobby. I study the marble tiles and woodwork and the art on the walls under the watchful eye of the doorman.

She emerges from the elevator and I watch her walk toward me, her faux fur coat hanging open. My gaze wanders from a chunky gold necklace shining at her throat, down over the short black dress to her excellent legs, and then lower to sexy black shoes with impossibly skinny heels.

Whoa.

What a contrast from the girl I hung out with the other day. But when I meet her eyes, it’s the same person, those sea green eyes dancing with life and humor. “Hi.”

“Hi. You look gorgeous.”

“Thanks. You look gorgeous too.” She touches the lapel of my black wool coat.

“The taxi’s waiting for us.” I set my hand on her low back and usher her out as the doorman opens the door for us. We slide into the back of the bright yellow car and I give the driver the restaurant address.

Sara shifts so she can face me. “I’ve heard of this place but never been there. This’ll be fun!”

We make small talk on the way there. I discover she watched the game last night, which startles me. Although . . . I like it.

“I have questions,” she announces. “So many questions.”

“About?”

“Hockey. I mean, I didn’t understand much. You guys move so fast out there! They drop the puck and wham, everyone’s skating all over the place.”

“Uh, yeah.” I’m amused by her description.

“They were talking about you.”

“Who was?” Clearly, her mind zips all over the place.

“The TV guys. They seem to think it was a good deal to get you from Dallas. They said . . . hell, I don’t remember what they said, but they were complimenting you.”

My mouth twitches into a near-smile. “Oh yeah? Were they talking about my passing and shooting skills? My controlled entries?”

She frowns. “Why does that sound dirty? How do you make hockey sound dirty all the time?”

“It’s one of my hidden skills. They probably didn’t talk about that.”

She snorts. “No! They didn’t.”

“It must have been my amazing skating. My hockey sense? My high compete level?”

“Well, they weren’t talking about your modesty.”

Goddamn, she makes me laugh.

“They probably said all those things,” she admits. “It sounded really good anyway. I thought how cool it was that I know you.”

I like that she’s maybe a little impressed with me since I’m kind of intimidated by her.

Traffic is nuts. We’re barely moving. The driver keeps honking, but there’s nowhere for the cars in front of us to go, so I don’t get the point of it.

We keep talking, but after a while I pull out my phone to check the time. It feels like we’ve only traveled two blocks. “Shit,” I mutter.

“What’s wrong?”

“Our reservation is for seven. This traffic is nuts.”

“Of course. It’s Saturday night in Manhattan.”

I hate being late. I hate rushing. I hate not being in control. “We could get out and walk there faster.”

She laughs softly and pats my leg. Well, that’s distracting. “Not in these heels, dude.

A Christmas to Die For by Jessica Frances

Drink way too much tequila at the office Christmas party? Check.
Get fired after doing something stupid at said Christmas party? Check.
Hallucinate flying reindeers in the sky? Check.
Watch those flying reindeer turn into naked people …? Check?
Discover magical elves are trying to kill you? Um … Wait! I don’t want to check that one!

Either I’m having the most epic blackout or my hangover has thrown me into the craziest world that has ever existed. I just found out that Santa is not only real, but he and his people can shapeshift into reindeer. I also just discovered that elves are real, which would be cool, except they’re evil and want to kill me! If that wasn’t bad enough, the elves and reindeer are at war with each other. So, not exactly like the cheery, heartwarming stories we’ve been told.

If a war between elves and reindeer isn’t shocking enough, it hardly holds a candle to finding out that I’m supposed to be the one person who can save an entire planet. Yeah, talk about being totally unqualified for the job. At least that overshadows the fact that I might now have a Santa kink when the young, hot, white-haired warrior is sent to protect me. But can I really help save Santa and his people? Can I stop the elves? Or is everyone doomed to suffer the deadliest Christmas ever?

To find out if this will be a Christmas to die for, buckle up in your sleigh, pour yourself an eggnog, and sing a Christmas tune, because this tale is about to get jolly and insane.

“So, you like the milk, but what about the cookie?” He slides a plate that has sat off to the side of us the entire meal. On it is a large, round object with dark spots. My human called it a chocolate chip cookie when he asked for it. It’s large enough to take up the entire plate.

“You expect me to eat that?” I can’t even muster up any sort of enthusiasm for it. It looks like hard dirt with specks of dark mud in it.

“Yep, but only after you get a refill. The best way to eat a cookie is to dunk it in milk.”

I eye the cookie again, wondering why I’m even considering putting myself through all of this for my human.

“Are you sure this is important? We could be back in the hotel room …” I remind him, hoping the nudge will push him in the right direction, which would be any direction away from this cookie at this point.

Unfortunately, a waitress refills my glass, and then my human rips off a small chunk from the cookie.

“Please?”

I’m the Santa of Christmas, the highest rank in our military, the wartime leader of my people, and one of the most feared foes of the elves, yet here I am, succumbing to my human, who is force-feeding me rubbish.

What have I become?

Scrounging together whatever bravery and fearlessness I hold during battles, I take the offered poison and dunk it in the milk. Then I close my eyes as I shove the entire thing in my mouth.

I consider just swallowing it whole, figuring my body can save me from the taste, but already my body heat helps to melt whatever ingredients are in this cookie so it crumbles into my mouth.

And … I have to say, it’s not that bad.

“Welcome to the film set, Mr. Kiharazaka. Please mind your step, we’re having a problem with vermin.”

The tall, thin man, fresh from Kyoto, adjusted his stride, placing each step of his spacesuit boots gingerly.

“I’m Rolf. Can I call you Zaka?” the assistant director went on.

“Please, no,” Mr. Kiharazaka replied demurely.

“Got it.”

“Will we be going weightless? It was in the original scene.”

“We’re woking on that, yes.”

“Woking?”

“A joke. Sort of.”

A few yards away, green gaffing tape marked the edge of the darkened film set. Rolf spoke into her headset and the lights came up, revealing the interior of the spacecraft: the complex helm and seating for the crew. The second setthe crew table and galley kitchenwas halflit in the distance.

Mr. Kiharazaka stared with unreserved delight. The crew had accurately replicated the 1990s television series Tin Can’s two most famous locations.

Members of the film crew were already on the set, at their places among the equipment; lights, extended boom mics, and various cameras, some dollied and some shoulder-held. Mr. Kiharazaka had to rotate stiffly in his spacesuit, turning his helmet, visor up, to watch the young, professional film crew. He nodded to some and spoke to none. For the most part, these serious professionals looked right through him, focused on their craft.

“Please step in, Zaka. We’d like you to feel comfortable in both locations.”

“Where is the cast? The Robbins family?”

“Soon enough. Please.” Rolf extended her hand and Zaka crossed the green tape and stepped into the helm, noting that the flooring was white painted plywood. With the flight helmet on, the voices about the set were muted. Zaka stared at the helm, admiring, but not touching, the multiple displays. He stood back of Captain Robbins’s helm chair, taking in all the exacting details of the complex spacecraft controls. Easing between the captain and copilot chair, he turned to Rolf with his white gloved hand out to the second chair and asked, “May I?”

Rolf gave him her buttery professional smile.

“Captain, permission to man the helm?” Zaka asked.

Rolf rolled her eyes, up into the complex scaffolding above. The client was already in role, using the famous and familiar dialogue from the Tin Can series. Since none of the cast was yet on set, Rolf answered for Matt Stuck, the sod of an actor who played Captain Robbins.

Three reasons you should read this Sweet Young Adult Romance:

  • When You Were Mine by Alessa Martel is a second-chance romance that rings true to life.
  • Jenny Collins regrets so many things, and she is forced to face them when she returns home – and she faces them well.
  • This second-chance isn’t because someone did the unthinkable or horrible thing. And I enjoyed that it allowed both characters to grow into their relationship in a natural way.

When You Were Mine by Alessa Martel

High school sweethearts. One night of heartbreak.

Michael and I used to be inseparable, but a devastating moment during a summer party after high school graduation brought our relationship to a painful stop. I avoided spending winter break from my freshman year in college back in my small town, but summer is closing in, looming like a dark cloud on the horizon. Returning home means facing Michael and the ruins of our relationship, but my fearful heart still aches over the future I always assumed we would share.

When my younger sister reveals that Michael is rumored to be engaged, I realize that I’m not ready to give him up. He’s moved on, with a beautiful fiancée who seems to make him happy, but can I stand by and ignore the love I still hold in my heart for him?

My Review of When You Were Mine:

When You Were Mine by Alessa Martel is a sweet second-chance romance between two high school sweethearts. Jenny and Michael were always the perfect couple. The one everyone expected to marry and have kids. Neither one saw the mix-up that would tear them apart.

Jenny and Michael are forced to face each other when she returns home from college for the summer. The whole town is abuzz with the news that Michael is engaged. And everyone is watching to see how Jenny will react.

I have to admire Jenny’s determination to go about her life and ignore all the watchers. She wants to do her job and get back to school. But Michael and his life seem to be everywhere she turns.

As Jenny realizes how much she missed him, she finds out his fiance is an amazing person. And she actually enjoys being her friend. So what is she going to do?

When You Were Mine really felt like a real story to me. Real teenage emotions and decisions that aren’t always correct. Wondering if that second-chance is worth grabbing or better passing it up. Jenny and Michael are both characters I only wanted to see happy in the end.

Brian had scarred her flesh. Lindsay could scar her soul. She couldn’t let him. She couldn’t let herself… want him. Not again. She’d had the stupidest crush on him when she’d first come to his office.

He backed her up against the leather table. Nowhere to run. Her heart pounded so hard in her chest she could hear it. She couldn’t think straight. She hated him. No… he was scaring her. No… God, why did he smell so fucking good? And the lack of a shirt… it was doing things to her.

He usually wore a suit. Business attire. Professional Shrink Wear. It covered up the physique he’d obviously worked hard for. She’d seen him in the gym on days off, or late in the evenings. Brian had the reputation for being the fitness buff, but Lindsay put in the time quietly without drawing much attention.

As recently as that morning, the doctor had just “been there”. Someone she despised, but otherwise nothing special. She hadn’t seen him this way since before the house. Shannon wanted to keep the more confusing hatred. This… yearning was more than she could stand.

“Why can’t you do this with me?” he asked with that professional practiced interest he was so skilled at.

“Because I fucking hate you.”

His hand moved to the back of her neck, threading through her hair, cradling her. He pulled her to him, his mouth covering hers in a kiss far more gentle than the danger in his eyes.

Against every normal instinct, she sighed and sort of… melted… against him. She missed this, so much. It had been so long since she’d been kissed like this—by anyone. It had been long before the house even. The last man who’d kissed her this way had been her last master. And he’d tossed her aside without a thought in the end.

You couldn’t trust a kiss like this. It was a lie to lower your defenses. A trap. It could never mean all the things it promised. But she wanted to believe it. She wanted to fall into it and pretend and believe just for a little while. Would that be so wrong?

Shannon pulled away from him, and then, as if to put extra punctuation on it, she put her hands on his chest and pushed him away. “This isn’t real. I don’t want your pity.”

He gripped her chin and forced her to look up at him. He was so tall. Had he always been this tall?

“Hear me. I want you. So get this pity nonsense out of your head. I want you. I’ve always wanted you. From the first moment you walked into my office. Now disrobe and get on the table like I told you to.”

“People get excellent advice all the time, but that doesn’t make them successful. You were smart enough to recognize which advice could work for you, and you were dedicated enough to implement it.”

He spoke with authority, but there was something in his expression that said she wasn’t his underling. She was important. She mattered. It didn’t remind her of anyone else in any movie at all. This was just him. Talking to just her.

“Don’t cry over Cinderella again. You aren’t anything like her. It’s very clear that she doesn’t measure up to you.”

Mallory looked at her leading man under the starlight, and she felt one last tear slip from the corner of her eye to roll elegantly down her cheek like a bit of movie magic.

Eli ran his finger up her cheek, stopping it in its tracks and whisking it away.

“I’m sorry I agreed to this fake date,” she whispered.

“Why is that?”

“Because I would kiss you right now, if we were real.”

Peter collected the chopped wood and set it on top of the pile against the house. Then he went around a corner, still not looking at her.

She waited on the step, refusing to go after him, but not mad enough to head inside and get out of the cold.

When he returned, he had three more heavy logs in his arms. Peter dumped them by the stump, keeping his eyes on the wood.

“Good morning,” she said, unable to stand the silent treatment any longer.

He ignored her and set one of the logs on the stump. He lifted his ax, centering the blade over the wood.

The ax came down, perfectly splitting the log in two. He worked methodically as he retrieved one of the halved pieces.

Another thunk cleaved the wood into smaller portions.

“Are you still mad about me beating you?”

He collected the pieces and brought them to her woodpile, keeping quiet.

She folded her arms, growing annoyed.

“I didn’t do anything to you that isn’t done a hundred times a day in any hockey rink across the country.”

He picked up another log and set it on the stump.

The heat in her cheeks rose. “Was leaving me in those woods your way of getting even? Well then, congratulations. One cheap shot deserved another.”

He lifted his ax and ran his hand up and down the handle. “I didn’t leave you. I made sure you could follow me back.”

“Am I supposed to be grateful to you for scaring me to death?”

He poised the ax blade above the log. “You’re not dead. Not even close.”

A loud crack reverberated as the ax drove into the wood.

A slither of satisfaction coiled through her when the blade got stuck halfway through the log.

With one arm, he picked up the ax and slammed the jammed log against the stump, but the stubborn log held on. Peter’s cheeks reddened as he raised the ax again and kicked at the determined chunk of wood.

“You need to sharpen your ax,” she said in a matter-of-fact tone.

He finally looked up at her. “What would you know about chopping wood?”

She smirked. “I know a dull tool when I see one.”

Her point made, Courtney turned back into the cabin, leaving him to stew.

But the moment she shut the door, it flew open. He stood in the doorway, the vexation in his eyes mirrored the knots in her stomach.

He put his hands on the doorframe, digging his nails into the wood. “I’m not mad about the game. I’m not a child.”

She pulled her robe closer. “Then why are you acting like one?”

The harsh lines in his brow softened. “I should never have come to you. I should have stayed away and left you alone in this cabin.”

Her first reaction was to balk at his confession, but then the meaning behind his words sank in, hitting her harder than any blow from his ax.

“Is that why you ran off the other day? Because you regretted knowing me?”

“I could never regret that. You have been a shining light in my very dark world.”

Three reasons you should read this Sweet Christmas Romance:

  • Making Christmas Magic by Rachel Carrington is all about connections – towns’ people, caretakers, and romantic – this book covers them all.
  • The kids in this story plan a part just big enough that I fell in love with them, but they didn’t steal the show from our main couple.
  • The problem Ainsley faces is a very real one, and while Nick is somewhat of a savior figure, I have no doubt Ainsley could have come out on to without him – it was just a little easier with some help.

Making Christmas Magic by Rachel Carrington

Sometimes, Christmas magic comes in mysterious ways.

Ainsley Beck is dedicated to the orphanage she runs and the twelve kids that are her responsibility. Sure, the house could use a lot of repairs, but it’s hers. That is, she believes it is until a handsome doctor arrives at her doorstep three days before Christmas to tell her that he’s just inherited the property…and it’s in foreclosure.

In spite of his intentions when he arrived in the small town of Broadway, after meeting Ainsley, Nick Riordan isn’t in any hurry to evict her. After all, it is Christmas. And his sudden change of heart has nothing to do with the immediate attraction he feels for her.

When a greedy lawyer throws a wrench into Nick’s plans and devastates Ainsley, he has to come up with a fallback plan to get Ainsley to trust him again before he loses much more than real estate.

Making Christmas Magic by Rachel Carrington was an amazing story. I love it when the primary source of conflict isn’t necessarily a person (although there is a major jerk in the story that certainly doesn’t help). In this case, the main conflict is a house about to enter foreclosure. And this isn’t just any house. It’s an orphanage that is barely hanging on.

When Nick (the newly inherited owner) tells Ainsley the situation, she’s devastated. But Nick is going to try and save the day. Even if his lawyer thinks it’s a horrible idea.

Nick won me over with a snowball fight. When you get there you’ll know exactly what I mean. It was the moment I really started thinking of him as the hero of the story. And I think Ainsley might have seen a little bit of that as well.

But something needs to be done – and quickly – before the bank takes over the house and Ainsley and her crew of kids are left looking for a new place to live. And at Christmas, too.

The sweet romance between Nick and Ainsley was a lot of fun. This was a wonderful, light-hearted Christmas romance that will set you up nicely in the holiday spirit.
