Fate, Love & Loyalty by E.J. Fechenda: Book Review

Love, Fate & Loyalty really takes a close look at the pull shifters have to their mates – whether they want to feel it or not. We have a set of dual relationships and love stories running through the story that revolves around two mountain lion shifter sisters.

At first, I felt like there was a good sister and a bad sister, but as the story unfolds and we get to know them, I came to realize that there were a whole bunch of misunderstandings running through their lives. Highlighting this strained relationship – Reeve returns home and “steals” Asters long-time boyfriend in a matter of minutes. But it’s the mating call – so I can’t really be too mad about it. Super sad for Aster, but even she knows there wasn’t anything to be done about it.

But while Reeve’s life may seem to be sunshine and rainbows, she has a mad-man (cat?) on her heels. And when he finds Havenwood Falls there are all sorts of horrible things that happen – and one really awesome thing.

This was a really great book, and I was shocked at how much story was packed into the pages. I hope we get to see more of the sisters, even as side characters, as the series continues.

Aster McCabe couldn’t be happier with her job managing Coffee Haven and baking blueberry scones the whole town raves about, especially her sweet and sexy boyfriend Patrick. She loves her simple, small-town life in Havenwood Falls. At least, until her sister suddenly shows up with trouble not far behind.
The sisters’ relationship has always been volatile, especially with the pressure of being the Alpha’s daughters and the expectation to be perfect. Reeve never failed in that department, and Aster grew up in the shadows of her sister’s success. But when Reeve left for college, Aster blossomed. So she’s dealt a painful blow the moment her sister walks in the door and meets Patrick—a mountain lion’s call to its mate couldn’t be any more obvious. Neither can it be controlled or refused.
When an unstable Alpha from another den claims Reeve as his mate, Aster, bitter over the recent betrayal, practically draws the guy a map to Reeve’s location, unknowingly putting her entire family and den in danger. Aster must figure out how to right her wrong and save her family. But loyalty and love are further tested when a stranger appears with the potential to forever change Aster’s fate.

Old Wounds by Susan Burdorf: Review

When Sherry heads out of town to forget a cheating ex, she finds herself heading to Havenwood Falls. This was a little odd, because she isn’t a paranormal creature, but it seems like the town and its guardians know more than I do.

When she’s rescued from an accident by Rusty – a lone wolf in every sense of the word – and stranded in his cabin to wait out the story, they are somewhat forced to get to know each other better. Here is where I wanted a lot more than what I got. I know the mating urge for a werewolf comes out of nowhere according to most lore, but I thought there wasn’t enough resistance from him as a lone wolf, and there wasn’t enough confusion, moving to acceptance, and finally moving to love from her.

You get plenty of conflict between Sherry and her ex though when he shows up looking for her. I really enjoyed watching a strong woman that refused to let anyone take advantage of her, and do it without turning into a hard and jaded person.

Old Wounds had so many good elements that were just cut a little short. I feel like the story just didn’t have enough time to fully develop the characters and the plot.

Forget You Not was a wonderful introduction to the world of Havenwood Falls. Being a person that just has to read series in order if at all possible, I really enjoyed getting the “first look” at the town along with Kaela as she takes on her dream job in the remote Colorado city.

But she soon discovers that the town really isn’t all that new to her. As she rediscovers all memories, she has to face the fact that someone has been messing around with her life – and in a way that has some pretty bad consequences – like really really bad.

But this is a romance, and it’s an interesting twist on long lost lovers – because Kaela doesn’t actually remember him at first. I loved the twist and turns that begin to bring them back together. And the rich backdrop of Havenwood Falls and its residents is one I look forward to visiting again.
